Description

It's also your typical morality tale of the "serves you right because you were naughty" variety. And, if you read the rest of the tales, when Peter Rabbit comes up again, he is much changed from his experience, and is basically a kind, upstanding member of the community, his veggie stealing days behind him. Aw. Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit. In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and became secretly engaged to her publisher, Norman Warne, causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding. I must admit that I absolutely didn't grow up knowing the work of Beatrix Potter. Later, I had heard about it, but still without really caring about it. It wasn't until a few months ago that I started to really take a look at it. And for my birthday I received the complete work (in French).

Even though I didn't love all the stories and rhymes, seeing all the lovely paintings and drawings by Potter was a delight. Though some of the stories kept me so pulled in I didn't want to look at the drawing in detail until later because I just wanted to find out the ending of that story. Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.A lovely book to treasure and read to succeeding generations of children. They will love Potter’s engaging tales as dearly as their grandparents and parents did — and still do! The shenanigans of Peter Rabbit and his cohorts still delight readers of all ages. Each character is unique, with cleverly crafted traits and a very particular personality…. These characters are endearing because they are true to life. They suffer consequences for disobedience and wrong choices. Potter’s stories have a universal appeal, transcending time and country.

As with most children’s books that have withstood the test of time, the books appeal to not only children, but adults. As Books Children Love explains:

Beatrix Potter’s tales began when Peter Rabbit first made his appearance in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, followed by 22 other tales that you will find in Beatrix Potter: The Complete Tales. Free eBooks And what can I say? I fell in love. Of her talent. Whether for writing, but also for her drawings. I really regret not having known younger. And at the same time, I tell myself that maybe I wouldn't have appreciated the work that much. Whether you're looking to relive those treasured moments of your childhood, or hoping to share some of your old favourites with your own little ones, there's no storybook world more pleasant than that of Beatrix Potter. Nearly every book list geared toward homeschoolers will include Beatrix Potter: The Complete Tales, or at least a story or two from the collection.

One of the things I liked about this collection of Beatrix Potter stories, rhymes, and paintings is that before each there is text explaining a bit about the story such as when it was written, what was going on in her life at the time it was written, etc. A perfect gift to introduce children to the world of Beatrix Potter, The Complete Tales is a timeless and classic essential for any nursery shelf. Revisit the world of Beatrix Potter in this timeless new audiobook edition. Anna Maria!’ squeaked the rat. There was a pattering noise and an old woman rat poked her head round a rafter…. All in a minute she rushed upon Tom Kitten, and before he knew what was happening— …. ‘Anna Maria,’ said the old man rat (whose name was Samuel Whiskers),— ‘Anna Maria, make me a kitten dumpling roly-poly pudding for my dinner.’” Also available in PDF.

Tom was very naughty…. And I think that some day I shall have to make another, larger, book, to tell you more about Tom Kitten!” Also available in PDF. A personal favorite. The author was asked by a child who “had told Beatrix that Peter was too good a rabbit, and she wanted a story about a really naughty one!” Well, as the story goes: “This is a man with a gun…. The good Rabbit peeps out of its hole. And it sees the bad Rabbit tearing past — without any tail or whiskers!” Also available in PDF. While a lot of these stories I remember hearing as a child there were also a decent number I hand not read before. Some stories were a bit nonsensical or absurd, though, maybe that is part of the point of those? It was also interesting to see what was considered appropriate for children in the early 1900s compared to today. Peter and his family were at home under the root and were warm and cozy. His Ma had an errand to run and left the kids to be good. She also told them to not go near Mr McGregor farm. Their father never returned when he went their. His sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy andThis edition includes a section at the end that contains four additional works by Beatrix Potter that were not published in her lifetime.
