In 1969 Gatorade became the official drink of the American National Football League (NBA), a title it holds to this day. It first launched in 1929 as a caramel-coloured lemon-lime soda, which he positioned as a drink with a 'flavour wallop'. Despite launching at the start of the Great Depression and competing against 600 other lemon-lime soft drinks already in the marketplace, the new brand sold well and by the late 1940s had become the third best-selling soft drink in the world.
