Murray, best-known for his character the Pub Landlord, has also made award-winning television shows on military history and has seen huge success hosting a podcast with fellow bestselling military historian James Holland, We Have Ways of Making You Talk. Command sees Murray analysing key military leaders of the Second World War, including some of the lesser-known officers. Through them, he tells how the allies rebounded from early defeats at Dunkirk and Pearl Harbour to victories at El Alamein and the D-Day invasion. In 2003, he was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy, and in 2007 he was voted the 16th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. He continues to perform as a stand-up and is a regular on British TV and radio. Well-known stand-up comedian and television personality Al Murray talks about his love of military history and the Second World War expressed in his first history book.Al Murray's new book proves, if anyone still feels the need to question it, that he is a major historian in his own right. Command is everything popular history should be: authoritative, full of deep wisdom and knowledge, genuinely fresh and original in approach and content, and both compelling and entertainingly written. Skilfully blending the famous names with those lesser known, he examines each in a completely fresh light, focussing on differing aspects that collectively offer a satisfyingly comprehensive whole that takes the reader on a journey across a wide range of landscapes, theatres and battles. It is an utter joy to read from start to finish.' - James Holland Each chapter features a different officer, starting with Montgomery and ending with Lt Peter White. Most of the featured officers are DUKE - Dominions UK and Empire - with Omar Bradley and George S Patton being the US entrants. The others are Bernard Freyburg, Francis Tuker, Orde Wingate, Bill Slim, Alastair Pearson, and Percy Hobart. How familiar these names will be to you depends on your knowledge of World War Two. With his trademark combination of humour and deep-thinking - an iron fist in a velvet glove - Al Murray's brilliantly incisive debut history forces us to think again about the nature of Command and how the Allies were able to turn disaster into triumph in World War II. Quirky, original and hard-hitting, it is as enjoyable to read as it is instructive. -- Saul David Comedy Writers". St Edmund Hall. Archived from the original on 14 July 2018 . Command: How the Allies Learned to Win the Second World…

I would not recommend it to the Expert Military Historian, who will already know more (or who will want to know more) about each of the subjects than the book will tell him but is a good choice for the casual history buff or the interested beginner who I believe are the people Murry has actually written the book for.a b Evangelista were Pat Reid (vocals), Martin Ellis (guitar), Paul Ewart (bass) and Al Murray (drums). Reid and Ellis were at school together in Crosby, Liverpool. Reid was at Oxford with Murray. The line up included different bass players of which Paul Ewart was the longest lasting. In April 2019, Murray started a podcast with historian James Holland called 'We Have Ways of Making You Talk', where they discuss battles and campaigns of World War II. Over 700 episodes have been released, including interviews with veterans and other historians, as well as Murray's narration of the book, 'The Cauldron' by Zeno. That the Allies were going to win, barring Germany of Japan discovering some wonder weapon or winning the race to produce the nuclear bomb, the reader is left in no doubt. Initially with Germany having a big head start in re-armament production, development of weapons and modernised tactics, the battle was just to remain in the war. There are the battles in North Africa, of which Montgomery was heavily involved, where tank warfare came to the fore, with British tanks being inadequate in build and fire power but also being used ineffectively. It is here that Tuker proves to be effective, but then later in the war the spirit of continuous improvement leads to ‘Hobart’s specials’ tanks resigned and modified to carry out specific roles during the ‘D Day’ Normandy landings. After graduating from the University of Oxford, his comedy career began by working with Harry Hill for BBC Radio 4. [ citation needed] He regularly performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, before launching his "Pub Landlord" persona (which he describes as a "know-all know-nothing blowhard who knows the answer to every question even though he hasn't been asked any of them"). [2] This led to the Sky One sitcom Time Gentlemen Please and the chat show Al Murray's Happy Hour for ITV.
