As secrets unravel about Legion's vicious past, questions rise over who has the true right to the throne. This wasn’t a bad read. I’m in no way upset that I took the time to read this. This was very basic, nothing grandiose and there’s nothing wrong with that. L. J. Andrews lives for fantasy books as an author and a reader. She adores books like “The Night Angel” trilogy, “The Great Library” series, “An Ember in the Ashes”, and “Harry Potter”, she could go on and on. Since I read The Ever King the other day I was intrigued by the story of Livia’s parents. So I began their trilogy.

I was just very disappointed after all this build up tension, and all these cute encounters, to find the spice scene being like all other spice scenes in all the other spicy books. Killian Thomas, who was abandoned by his family when he was a young child, has suddenly gotten one chance to find some answers to his past in a bizarre realm. This mysterious community, which is bound to protect the realms, promises to aid him on his quest if he helps in this desperate search for the lost relics of the realms. Each of these magical relics is bestowed with the mysteries of every realm, giving their owner unimaginable power. The worldbuilding also seems strange. I still don’t think I fully understand how the Fae and their magic tie into the story or how their magic works. A lot of their history is told, not shown through actual “history lessons” disguised as journal entries. And all I can see when I read the word Ettan is two headed giants, not people who have magic. The name of magic is also called fury but then it is given multiple other names and it becomes blurry. The main issue I had with this book is the writing. The characters were fantastic and the world building showed great potential but because these are dependent on the writing something was amiss.

However, based on folklore and legends surrounding curses in general, here are some common signs or symptoms that are often associated with the Curse of Shadows and Thorns: Long ago, Elise's ancestors stole the crown from the fae king. As the niece of the brutal, current king, her purpose is to do whatever is asked to ensure her family keeps the throne for centuries to come. The trouble is, Elise would rather sneak into gambling halls with the servants than be a silent princess at a ball. And while this story is interesting (and the audio good enough), I’m not yet sold on this series nor the author’s talent of storytelling. It was a bit slow going tbh. Of course, with me having read the spin-off first, the big plot twist came as no surprise to me but I tried to not let it influence my judgement. Prayer and Affirmations: Engaging in prayers, affirmations, or mantras focused on breaking the curse and invoking positive energies can be a powerful practice. This can involve reciting specific prayers or creating personalized affirmations that affirm your intention to release the curse’s grip and invite positive change into your life. We have Elise, a princess who doesn’t like to follow the rules, she’s cunning, witty and brave. She’s your typical female lead.

The world LJ has created for The Broken Kingdoms series is also truly taking shape in this book. The questions I had after book one were answered. We were given some delicious plot twists, and although I have to wait a few more hours to get home again, I'm already extremely excited to start the next book in this series. Pirate’s Vengeance” is the first novel in the “Djinn Kingdom” series and was released in 2017. Plunder, pillage, and survive. The soft attempt of a Love Triangle was almost there and as much as I don’t really like Love Triangles it would have added a little more angst to an already drawn out plot that might have given it that little extra thing it needed to not feel boring. When her uncle holds the life of her deathly-ill father over her head, reluctantly, Elise puts her fate into the hands of Legion Grey, the handsome and mysterious dowry negotiator. He may be arrogant and infuriating, but soon Legion incites a blistering, forbidden passion she can’t ignore.

This story is about Elise who is the second daughter of the Kings sister. On the night of her sisters formal engagement to her cousin (the Kings son), the King announces that he is opening up dowry negotiations for Elise. Elise wants nothing more in life than to NOT be married but after the King threatens her deadly-ill father’s treatment she has to accept the negotiations. Due to her fathers health he cannot do the negotiations and the King does not have time to do it either, so he assigns the task to the incredibly gorgeous and mysterious Legion Grey… Legion has secrets (and unknown to her but known to the reader he is cursed) and after events unfold Elise finds herself needing to make an impossible choice that could save Legion but comes with a great sacrifice.

The world building is still really good and the fighting scenes were epic. The excerpts of Queen Lilianna’s journal were a nice touch to help develop the history of the land. With everybody fighting to keep the two of them apart, is their bond going to be strong enough to defeat such a treacherous evil? The plot remains too predictable even for my taste of reading the same tropes over and over, that it almost feels childish how predictable the “twist” was. The Curse of Shadows and Thorns is characterized by an aura of darkness and despair, emanating from the intertwining malevolent forces of shadows and thorns that shroud the affected realm in perpetual twilight. Its corruptive influence seeps into the hearts of its inhabitants, magnifying negative emotions and fostering an atmosphere of distrust.She lifted her chin, voice low. “I grow so weary of pretentious kings thinking they have a say in my life. Consider me no longer your burden to bear. My fate is mine.” The tale of the Curse of Shadows and Thorns lives on as a testament to the indomitable power of the human spirit to overcome darkness through acts of love and redemption. It reminds us that while shadows may cloud our lives, the choice to embrace empathy, forgiveness, and courage can lead us toward a path of healing and renewal.
