The Rival: To Orso. Both want to become king of Styria, but while Orso isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty, Rogont uses more subtle political maneuvering to achieve his goal.

The Dragon: Seems to have taken over as Khalul's right hand after Mamun's death at the end of the trilogy. Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a much better person than she wants to admit - with good reason, considering what tends to happen to good people in her world. Piss on your reputation! Nothing but idiots’ chatter! You’re a dream. A vision. You look like . . .’ He snapped his fingers. ‘The very Goddess of War!’Broken Pedestal: Gave Monza and Benna a home and taught her to fight and both of them to read. Then he turned into a neglectful drunkard. Monza’s bulging eyes followed them as they dragged Benna’s corpse out through the doors to the terrace, Ganmark grim and careful at the head end, Ario cursing as he daintily took one boot, the other smearing a red trail after them. They heaved Benna up onto the balustrade and rolled him off. Like that he was gone.

Let’s make this the last season on campaign,’ Benna wheedled. ‘The last summer in the dust. Let’s find something more comfortable to do. Now, while we’re young.’ Save the Villain: Monza attempts this when she has second thoughts about killing him, but it's already too late. Tsundere: Insults and put-downs seem to be practically foreplay for her. Though she recalls much sweeter moments with Benna, particularly their times in their room, laughing and talking of their dreams for the future. Takes on a new meaning when the reason they shared the room was due to them being lovers. Obviously your novels are set in a low magic setting ( or are they? ) as it appears at this time, with by turns less fantastical elements at play novel by novel. Personally I like it kept to a minimum, unless it’s something a little unusual that we’ve maybe not seen much or at all before. Wizard’s throwing out fireballs, becoming invisible, harnessing momentous powers that are completely unexplained and totally unbalancing make me cringe. Conversely I like it when a fantasy writer creates and adheres to universal laws, even if they are purely invented. That’s where Sanderson’s Mistborn series really sold me. His allomancy concept was unusual, original and defined. The latter being the truly unusual element. A Lighter Shade of Grey: He's an ambitious, manipulative schemer who has no qualms about throwing his own allies under the bus for his personal gain, but he's still not as ruthless as Orso.He will have to rely on the noble Duke Rogont and his Osprians,’ said Ganmark, with the faintest of smiles.

Without sorcery or fantastical creatures and so on, then what we are left with is a kind of historical fiction set in a fantasy world. I have no problem with that either as a reader. I did like the first half more than the second, there were some really memorable scenes in the first half and the subsequent decline was a little depressing. But I think it all came together well and there was some memorably stuff in the second part and a satisfying ending. All in all a very entertaining read. General Ganmark’s face was strangely soft, his moustaches limp, his pale grey eyes always watery, lending him a look of perpetual sadness. The rumour was he’d been thrown out of the Union army for a sexual indiscretion involving another officer, and crossed the sea to find a more broad-minded master. The breadth of Duke Orso’s mind was infinite where his servants were concerned, provided they were effective. She and Benna were proof enough of that. Pretty Boy: He's consistently described as being stunningly gorgeous or handsome. Even his enemies and rivals think of him in flattering terms, where looks are concerned. She narrowed her eyes against the stiff breeze, pushed some stray hair out of her face. ‘I never tire of this view.’Chekhov's Gunman: She's mentioned in the original trilogy, but doesn't appear in person until later. Rogue Protagonist: While he's always been a self-serving bastard, he's outright nasty in Red Country. How could you? It’s why I built this damn place. Here I can keep one eye always on my subjects, as a watchful parent should upon his children. Just to make sure they don’t hurt themselves while they play, you understand.’ A Father to His Men: Despite the ruthless attitude maintained, she cared deeply about the welfare of her troops and deserved her popularity. Joe Abercrombie was born in 1974, in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. He grew up reading fantasy books like Lord of the Rings, Dragonlance, the Belgariad, and Game of Thrones, so his love for fantasy was a constant companion. Joe attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School, following which he enrolled at Manchester University to study psychology.
