Introduction to Theory and Practise of Compassion Focused Therapy

Since the early eighties, Professor Paul Gilbert and many colleagues have been involved in developing Compassion Focused Therapy's practice, theory, and research. CFT is a continuously developing approach to psychotherapy that has resulted in many therapists across many countries engaging in training in CFT. To date, many CFT workshops have been provided by Professor Gilbert and colleagues across many countries. Over recent years, we have also seen a rise in the development of longer training courses that aim to support trainees in developing a deeper understanding of the knowledge and practices of CFT indifferent countries, including the BPS Approved Diploma in Compassion Focused Therapy from the Compassionate Mind Foundation in the UK. The next stage of development is to support training in clinical supervision. This training pathway has been developed, and is over seen, by Dr Wendy Wood. Yes, it is long, but I treated the reading experience like an occasional digging through the massive tool box (treasure chest, really) of a seasoned therapist, trying out an exercise or two as I went a long and making note of what worked for me. Advanced Clinical Skills

This ten-month course has been developed to meet the growing interest, research, and practice of CFT. We are uniquely privileged to have developed this course with Professor Paul Gilbert OBE, the founder of Compassion Focused Therapy and founder and President of The Compassionate Mind Foundation. Paul is an internationally renowned clinical psychologist, and leading researcher and practitioner in the area of compassion. He has been actively involved in research and treatment for people facing a wide range of life difficulties, working in both clinical and non-clinical settings, for over 45 years. During this time, he has also provided training for therapists in many countries worldwide. Gilbert, P. (2010). Compassion focused therapy. CBT Distinctive Features Series. New York: Routledge. the soothing system is our brain’s natural ‘threat regulator,’ which can be activated by disengaging from internal stimulators of threat (e.g., rumination, self-criticism) or by distancing oneself from one’s inner emotions (e.g., via mindfulness). Once activated this system can be used to approach aversive inner experiences in a compassionate frame of mind. humans have at least three types of emotional regulation systems: threat-focused and protection and safety-seeking; drive, excitement, and vitality; affiliative-focused soothing system; A lot of the science in the book was something I found quite interesting. For example the fact that aside from the threat and excitement system, animals also have a soothing/contentment system which basically means they don't worry when there is nothing to specifically worry about. Humans spend little time in this zone because we are wired to think about threat all the time - much more so than anything pleasurable. Learning about this helped me feel less frustrated about myself and more normal when I'm being a 'worrywart'. Eradicating bad feelings can never be the end goal as they are part of our basic make-up and serve a purpose, but we can be kinder to ourselves about feeling them. The central therapeutic technique of CFT is compassionate mind training, which teaches the skills and attributes of compassion. [2] Compassionate mind training helps transform problematic patterns of cognition and emotion related to anxiety, anger, shame and self-criticism. [1] :208 Methods to explain and explore the interaction between threat-based emotions such as anger, anxiety and sadness It talks about our under developed self soothing system in the west, which is exacerbated if you were not given a lot of this in your early years. It divides systems into three (for the sake of simplicity) Threat system, Drive system, Soothing system... If you stop and take note of your thoughts and emotions, a lot of these fall into Threat or Drive, so the task is to build upon the soothing. Compassion-focused therapy is especially appropriate for people who have high levels of shame and self-criticism and who have difficulty in feeling warmth toward, and being kind to, themselves or others. [1] CFT can help such people learn to feel more safeness and warmth in their interactions with others and themselves. [1] This is one of the most helpful books I’ve ever read. Some of it may not be new to you if you’ve read a bit about self-compassion research or the way our poorly evolved brains cause us trouble. But I still got a lot from how he ties the science and some stories together into what it all means for you (and, at the end of the book, for us as a society).

If anyone wants to borrow this I'm happy to give you it 😊 it's a book I'd definitely recommend to give more understanding of how the mind works and how to be more compassionate to yourself No work, no self purpose and no routine are some of the many things people are experiencing at this time and it can be hard to face these changes. This book gave me so much understanding on how our minds work and how we react to change.Compassion Focused Therapy is rooted in an evolutionary model of human psychology. Participants on this course will be introduced to the difficulties that the human brain encounters as a result of its evolutionary history. We explore the way in which old motivation and emotional systems interact with newly evolved cognitive competencies and intelligences, causing difficulty and complexity in the mind. It has some good facts and interesting theories but it is the most repetitive book I have ever read or listened to.
