Description

The 7.5l urine container should be emptied daily where possible – not in inland waterways where the nitrogen acts as food for algae. The time taken to fill the solids tank will vary with use. On weekend boats, the solids tank might last a season. On liveaboard boats it might need to be emptied every three to four weeks. If the toilet is just to be used in moments of desperation then there is no reason why you can’t find a temporary spot inside your tent or campervan to work your magic – we’ve tried this approach and found that it’s a good idea to tell anyone you’re travelling with to keep away in moments like these – danger zone! You can get to know your own family a bit too well under such circumstances! Be prepared to sanitize your hands after using a portable toilet (and after emptying and cleaning the device). So how does it work? Well firstly it has two waste compartments – one for ‘solids’ and one for ‘liquids’ – you could call them number 1 and number 2 if you prefer! Compartment ‘2’ should be lined with a biodegradable liner and after use sprinkled with sawdust or peat or similar – this helps suppress nasty niffs and starts the composting process (a natural degradation of waste by bacteria). Our collections by our couriers are happening as usual. As it stands, delivery times are not being affected too much. Please be aware though that Royal Mail and other couriers are sometimes prioritising essential items so please bear with us if your delivery takes slightly longer than expected.

Of course, a portable toilet can be as basic as you like, but if you've got a little money to spare, there are some excellent features to look out for that can make your bathroom breaks more comfortable and convenient. Here are the main ones to look out for: Decathlon’s Compact Folding Dry Toilet comes with a lid and is used with a 40-50l toilet bag and sawdust (bought separately). Portable toilets with flush technology, which are often more of an investment, sport a two-compartment design with separate tanks for water and waste. These models, typically powered by pumps, allow users to flush and rinse the toilet bowl with the touch of a button. Sanitization chemicals can also be added to liquify the waste, and tank level indicators help users know when it’s time to empty. If you’re limited on space, a collapsible camping toilet such as the Carplife Bivvy loo is a good idea, as this will fold up easily and include a seat and a waste bag. They are supplied in boxes of 20 and work out at just over 50p per bag,” he says. “The liner fits perfectly around the rim of the toilet bowl and comes with an absorbent gel pad which will absorb up to 600ml of urine.”Some nice features include a transport roll for easy transportation when full, swivelling drainage pipe and fill level indicator.

PBO reader Stefan Leschner says ‘Air Head’ is the way to go. The Air Head compost toilet is a durable, waterless toilet suitable for canalboats, campervans, caravans, yachts and motorhomes.Originally made for anglers, it’s been a gamechanger for wild campers, festival goers and overland drivers. It contains 12 compostable liner bags with sachets of powder, each capable of turning up to 2 litres of waste into manageable gel, plus 40 biodegradable wipes. For a different twist on the camping toilet genre, how about going full on Eco-Warrior with the Blue Diamond Composting Toilet? Thetford designed the original ‘Porta Potti’ and are still the major player in portable toilets today, especially amongst RV owners, many of whom get cupboards built especially to fit them. The outer section has a lid which allows access to the inside where the action takes place. There are also a couple of carry handles for moving the toilet around.
