This compendium of the first 9 volumes is a good way to binge read everything that’s been published for the series at this point in time. a b c d e Vaughan, Brian K.( w),Staples, Fiona( a)."Chapter Four" Saga,no.4(June 2012).Image Comics.

I could not recommend this highly enough to anyone who enjoys scifi/fantasy or graphic novels. If those aren’t really your thing, or you're looking to try something different, I’d still recommend it. The book was announced at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International, [4] and was billed as " Star Wars meets A Game of Thrones" in solicitations. [1] Saga represents the first time Vaughan has employed narration in his comics writing, a decision influenced by the whimsical interaction between the text and images in the children's books he reads with his children, and by his desire to try something new that he felt would work well with Saga 's narrator, Hazel. [5] It is also his first series to be published through Image Comics, [18] whom he selected as the series' publisher on the recommendation of the writer Jay Faerber, who cited the creative freedom afforded by that publisher. [15] Vaughan elaborated on his selection of Image thus: a b Vaughan, Brian K.( w),Staples, Fiona( a)."Chapter Eight" Saga,no.8(December 2012).Image Comics. The world-building (or rather: universe-building!) in general is brilliant: Vaughan has created a rich and complex universe, filled with different species, cultures, and technologies. The attention to detail is impressive, and I found myself fully immersed in this fantastical world.Melrose, Kevin (February 16, 2016). Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples

I realized that making comics and making babies were kind of the same thing and if I could combine the two, it would be less boring if I set it in a crazy sci-fi fantasy universe and not just have anecdotes about diaper bags... I didn’t want to tell a Star Wars adventure with these noble heroes fighting an empire. These are people on the outskirts of the story who want out of this never-ending galactic war... I’m part of the generation that all we do is complain about the prequels and how they let us down... And if every one of us who complained about how the prequels didn’t live up to our expectations just would make our own sci-fi fantasy, then it would be a much better use of our time. [13] [17] Writer Brian K. Vaughan signing a poster for the series at Midtown Comics in Manhattan a day after the first issue's release And another thing I love is how effortlessly these characters have depth; how everyone is a complicated tangle of good and bad and everything in between. I’m thoroughly hooked now. That was the moment I got the entire series. Because there’s no way I won’t want to finish. a b c d Vaughan, Brian K.( w),Staples, Fiona( a)."Chapter Nineteen" Saga,no.19(May 2014).Image Comics.

The fourth Volume, which begins Book Two, establishes the family living on the planet Gardenia, with Alana acting in an underground entertainment program called the Open Circuit in which all the actors wear masks. Hazel is now speaking in simple phrases, while Prince Robot IV's son is born. [47] A disgruntled robot janitor, Dengo, kills Prince Robot IV's wife, kidnaps his infant son [48] and journeys to Gardenia, where he kidnaps the family. [49] Marko and Prince Robot IV team up with Yuma to pursue them. Meanwhile, The Brand teams with Gwendolyn and Sophie to acquire an elixir to heal The Will's injuries. [50]

This one’s a volume of both freedom and institutionalisation, separations and reunions; with one in particular tugging on the heart-strings. I must be getting sentimental in Fatherhood. This feels like a transitional volume — and I loved it. It fills in the domestic bliss of Marko and Alana on the planet Gardenia… Oh wait. Bills need to be paid, and Alana has to get a job (and gets into drugs) while Marko is a stay-at-home dad who’s feeling more and more estranged from his wife. Drugs and drudgery are straining this family.

I am a little bit scared of the inevitable heartbreaks that the next volume will likely bring, as things have indeed been set into motion. And yes, a part of me just hopes that maybe from now on Saga will just be a story of lovely domestic bliss, with everyone learning to get along — but something tells me it is so NOT going to happen. My parents taught me never to get too attached to new people who came into my life, since attachment is the root of suffering. But the times I’ve suffered most were when I had no attachments so who knows, right? a b Vaughan, Brian K.( w),Staples, Fiona( a)."Chapter Sixteen" Saga,no.16(November 2013).Image Comics. a b c Gilly, Casey (November 20, 2014).
