Twenty years later, Barbie modeled a bright pink and silver spacesuit "with sparkly skirt and tights. Based on popular Space Camp programs for children and teenagers, this doll was the first space-themed Barbie that wasn’t an astronaut. This Barbie® teacher doll inspires her student to dream big in a science classroom playset and help launch play equipped with out-of-this-world pieces, like a blackboard that flips, two desks, a telescope and more! This is the version of Barbie that was chosen for Mattel’s Mission DreamStar expedition to the International Space Station in 2022. The three earlier Barbie dolls to enter the National Collection include a red-headed 1965 example of "Miss Astronaut" wearing a silver spacesuit inspired by the Mercury astronauts; an African American 1985 Astronaut Barbie in a suit featuring a hot pink ruffled blouse and skirt; and the Toys R' Us Astronaut Barbie issued in 1994 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 first moon landing.

Visitors to the museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, can see four iterations of Astronaut Barbie: 1965 Miss Astronaut, 1985 Astronaut Barbie, 1994 Moon landing Barbie, and the two Barbies that went to space in 2022. Kids can set up class using the 2 desks and the blackboard with storage at the bottom -- flip the board to reveal a different science lesson! Blast off to new worlds with the Barbie® Space Discovery™ Space Station playset and inspire imaginations! As a classified flight, not much is officially known about what the astronauts did while in orbit, however one thing the STS-38 crew did do was photograph Barbie floating in front of a window with the Earth below as her backdrop. The first two Barbie dolls to fly in space, part of Mattel's "Space Discovery" line, are seen on display the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F.Additional pieces include a telescope, lunchbox, cup, teddy bear and backpack -- some have a handle a doll can hold to encourage storytelling and role-play fun! The pair of "Space Discovery" dolls that debuted July 18 at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Like anything else that flies in space, the two dolls received special preparation before the flight. aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, Barbie and the STS-38 crew spent nearly five days in space (4 days, 21 hours, 54 minutes and 31 seconds, to be exact) on a mission for the Department of Defense.

Kids, especially those fascinated with space and science, will love exploring the possibilities with Barbie®. Miss Astronaut Barbie from 1965; Astronaut Barbie from 1985 and the Toys R Us Apollo 11 25th anniversary Barbie from 1994 as seen in the toys case at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F.The first Barbie dolls to fly into space went on exhibit on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Subsequently, Denison and his fellow astronaut instructors got the idea to hide the Barbie as they set up the shuttle simulator ahead of each training run. Barbie, a space Princess, sees her world rapidly change when the stars in the sky begin to fade away.

The Miss Astronaut set included a silvery spacesuit much like those worn by the Mercury and Gemini astronauts of her time. And both Barbie dolls sport hair that has been styled, not just to prevent the flyaways of a bad hair day, but also to literally keep any hair from shedding into the spaceflight environment. In 1998, Mattel released Space Camp Barbie (not in our collection), whose blue flight suit is much more in line with what actual astronauts were wearing during the 1990s.There's always quality in voice acting, CGI and some funny small details signaling that they do intact "try" and succeed. As featured in a newly-released special episode of the brand's "You Can Be Anything" web video series, the two diverse Barbie dolls have been filmed floating inside the space station's multi-windowed Cupola backdropped by Earth below. It was on a DOD [Department of Defense] flight, and that's why you might not have seen much on it," said Steve Denison in an interview with collectSPACE. From balloons to candles and everything in between, grab all the party essentials you’ll need to set the scene for their birthday bash.

Now, in the same week that Barbie is launching onto the silver screen in a new movie starring Margot Robbie as the title character, the flown dolls are having a premiere of their own.Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, after spending several months aboard the International Space Station in 2022.
