The story's lovable characters, engaging plot, and positive messages about self-acceptance and friendship resonated with my child. The inimitable words of poet/goddess Hollie McNish once again hold up honest, damn funny and refreshing takes on the everydayness of our lives. Also, there are some good vocabular words, plod, grimy, slippy (must be a yinzer), squelchy, slimy, icky, mucky, yucky, and sticky. Foley tells Brady that he has been reading up on the slugs and after dissecting and doing tests, he says that they are a hybrid of the ordinary garden variety. The book is also full of lots of different kinds of bugs, descriptive words and best of all, a happy ending for Doug.

We see various insects that have all the reasons not to hug Doug, but then he meets another snail (whose name and house I loved, come on, if I was a slug I would so have a house like that) and you would think that it may work out… well I am not telling. The Way Home For Wolf is one of my absolute favourite small children's books so I was really excited to get this one from netgalley. The expressive illustrations of Doug and his friends bring the story to life and add depth to the characters, making them relatable and endearing to young readers. Certain aspects of slug identification will never be easy, but the book provides assistance and encouragement to make the task less daunting and even relatively straightforward. Kids don't generally relate to stories about falling in love, or about the loneliness of not being able to find someone to love, so the subject matter feels like a weird choice.Slugs make their way through the garden, into the drain, up the drain pipe, along the guttering, down onto a window sill and drop onto the floor of the bedroom.

Read all the way, see the notes at the end (telling you a few things you should see or could see if you look). Our Smug slug starts up a steep slope and his animal friends all voice loud warnings, but Slug keeps climbing. It really bothered me - I don't know that a kid would be bothered - but the fact that the last line doesn't rhyme. However, it explodes when it touches moisture so they talk to Don Palmer about how to get it into the sewer system. Slug in Love tells the story of Doug, a shy and love-struck slug who wants to express his feelings to the beautiful Petunia, but feels discouraged by his lack of traditional gifts.

Brady goes to see if the poison has done its job, but although some of the pellets have gone, the slugs are still there.Slug is about the human condition: of birth and death and how we manage the possibilities in between. It can really get the 'slug world' moving, and for those already engaged in study it should provide the means to approach identification with a new confidence. The illustrations are bright and colorful and simple, so definitely a good picture book for small kids.

This book can be used by students by having them define what the words mean by first looking at the illustration and have them guess and second to have them actually look up the word. Whether she is hitting home hard on, for example, the domino effect of period poverty, throwing a curveball on cat ladies or engendering a new appreciation of the lyrics of Shakira, McNish is eminently readable and relatable because she is both fallible and fascinating. Both men tip the 5 gallon drum of poison down into the sewer which sets off a chain reaction sweeping through the entire Merton sewer system. The plan is for Brady and Palmer to go down into the sewer by Ron Bell's house and act as bait, luring the slugs into a central chamber, while Foley waits above ground and releases the poison. This is a book which should grace the bookshelves at home and at school and it is definitely for sharing and reading aloud: young children will just love Doug as will their teachers, parents and anyone who might happen to pick it up. I thought the use of the "s" alliteration made the book fun, but other than that, I didn't absolutely adore it. Yes, I wouldn’t hug a slug, but I am sure there is someone and I was eager to see who would want to be with Doug.
