Nighttime sequences are lavished in silky, inky-rich shadows that never engulf or ruin the finer details. I absolutely loved Christopher Nolan’s portrait of Batman and thought that Christian Bale nailed it. However, without a doubt, Heath Ledger's unforgettable performance as the homicidal psychopath Joker is a major part of the film's continued fascination and enjoyment over the years. All three films in the Dark Knight Trilogy benefit from stellar audio tracks, and The Dark Knight is certainly no exception, boasting some blistering action sequences and a tremendous score by composer Hans Zimmer, who channels the robbery theme in Michael Mann's Heat to great effect for the opening sequence, and sets the tone for a hell of a ride. Skin tones are far more consistent than Batman Begins and far less bronzed than Inception, and overall The Dark Knight's Ultra HD Blu-ray release gets things just right which, in terms of a previously flawed Blu-ray release, is exactly what you want.

Like some of the other films in the Nolan collection, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES could easily become your new reference quality video disc. Skin tones and black levels are good, but there is a visible drop in sharpness compared to the IMAX footage (noticeably more so than Dunkirk's widescreen 70mm footage). Still, the good news here is that there doesn't appear to be any over-sharpening; it's just hard to compete with IMAX 15/70.

As with all of the other Nolan releases on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Batman Begins relegates all of its extras to the accompanying Blu-ray discs, differentiating itself from most of the other Nolan Blu-rays in this selection by having a rare Picture-in-Picture track - complete with behind the scenes footage and interview snippets with all of the main cast - but still largely Featurette-based in its main body. The Dark Knight on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray is presented in 2160p resolution (4x the resolution of 1080p Blu-ray) with variable aspect ratios between 2. Many of these moments come with that looking-through-a-window effect fans will love, with the entire Joker trying to kill Harvey Dent sequence being my personal favorite to demo. This site, by its very nature, contains spoilers and other information that might influence your enjoyment of the films.

The shortest film in the trilogy is 140 minutes, with the longest running 165, giving Nolan plenty of time to let things develop and unfold. The good news is that the difference is far less noticeable than IMAX v 35mm, and there are no signs of any weird digital enhancements or over-sharpening. It’s a relatively small thing but it not only provides some idea of what it to come, but it was just a really smooth way to segue into the sequel. Shot on both 35mm and IMAX 65mm, this was the first film in Nolan's oeuvre where he started playing with shifting aspect ratios and IMAX, and - but for Inception - he's never looked back.Nolan has said that’s his preferred audio choice, but all of his films could have used a Dolby Atmos upgrade. Batman Begins doesn’t have quite the definitive visual pop of The Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises. There are eight Featurettes, including the introduction to this reboot in Genesis of the Bat; the casting with Batman: The Journey Begins; Path to Discovery looking at the Iceland shoot; Saving Gotham City focusing on the action sequences using practical effects; Shaping Body and Mind seeing Bale transform into Batman; Gotham City Rises looking at the set design; Cape and Cowl detailing the Batsuit; and Batman: The Tumbler exploring the superb new Batmobile. This is particularly evident in Batman Begins, where we don’t even see Wayne as Batman until an hour into the film.Nolan is fairly well known at this point for his dislike of immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, so all three of these films make do with a 5. The trilogy consists of Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), directed by Christopher Nolan. Christopher Nolan's award-winning "The Dark Knight Trilogy" includes BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Where Marvel’s formula leans towards being light when it needs to, and DC—especially with the Zack Snyder films—tends to go overly dark and somber, Nolan found a way to be serious and mature but still fun. And that doesn’t even mention the multiple other characters that weave through the story, like Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Nestor Carbonell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Aaron Eckart. While these aren’t films that consistently utilize emphatic color schemes, there are times elements that make for dazzling visuals, and that comes across with aplomb in their Ultra HD renderings. It's a great upgrade, but that's partly due to the fact that the earlier Blu-ray was just so problematic and, whilst it erases most of those problems, the end result is still not demo territory. If you would like to change your settings or withdraw consent at any time, the link to do so is in our privacy policy accessible from our home page. Still, even in a room with a lot of ambient lighting, the results were striking, especially for IMAX footage. Aside from that, the transfer has some standard upgrades, but it doesn’t feel like that’s going to be enough to silence its critics.
