Now hitting its 20th Anniversary in 2023, the band celebrate by releasing this limited edition ruby red vinyl version. debate which has loomed overhead ever since, the album has seen a steady reassessment from lacklustre follow up to underappreciated gem. As soon as they kicked in their first song that day, I was hooked and convinced that this music will stand the test of time. Meeting Deftones on the Rock am Ring 2000 in person all stoned, super friendly and easy going right before they entered the stage was not what I expected at all.

No matter what type of project Deftones followed up their career-defining White Pony with, it was destined to disappoint at least some of their devout fanbase. Not quite as punchy as my other deftones records but the guitars are THICK on this one and the riffs are bone crushing. Originally released in 2003, the band's self-titled fourth effort would mark their final collaborative project with iconic producer Terry Date (until reuniting for 2020's Ohms), while notably eschewing much of the "nu-metal" residue that still clung to their sonic makeup. If I had to give any gripes, paper sleeves house the records and that's always gonna dock a little bit of points in my book. I can't find legit ANY info on it outside of here, and it seems legit baffling that a big label would repress this record in such a small number that it's already sold out again?

With any luck, this reissue should continue to help highlight the cause as cuts such as 'Minerva' still soar with triumphant yet sultry hypnotics while 'Hexagram' serves as one of the heftiest cuts in the band's canon. Instrumentation sounds much more dynamic than listening to the album digitally, even with my relatively modest audio set up. Chino’s vocals are warm, rich, and clear, and Stephen’s guitar really slices through each track- all supported by Abe’s punchy drumming and Chengs present basswork (really nice to be able to hear and feel the bass in these recordings! The band consists of Chino Moreno (lead vocals and guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), and Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion).
