About this deal

It kept me on the edge of my seat and I ended up reading it in two sittings as I found it so compelling.

The Housemaid Series by Freida McFadden - Goodreads

When Kat tells you to read “the housemaid” for book club and you realize 46% of the way thru that it’s the wrong book 😂 first half was boring af but honestly I didn’t love the writing at all in the second half but the plot wasn’t half bad! In addition, she learns that Nina spent time in a psychiatric hospital after trying to kill Cecelia when she was a baby.McFadden knows exactly how to consistently raise the stakes in her novel, always keeping them in sight and never letting us forget the seemingly constant danger our characters are in. Lord Bertie is the Patriarch of the family, his mother in law Margot and two children, the creepy Alex and the somewhat strange Lottie. It's a gruesome miniature doll in her likeness, trapped inside a dollhouse, lying in a pool of blood. Plus that prologue featuring a police investigation that clearly suggests a dead body has been found. And when Millie first steps into that place, even being a maid in that household seems like a dream came true.

“The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden (Review. Psychological

Her mistress Nina, our second main character, seems to take delight in driving her insane, apparently creating messes only to watch Millie clean them up. And with her growing attraction to Nina’s handsome husband Andrew, she’s not even sure she’d wanted to. A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of The Housemaid by Freida McFadden in exchange for an honest review. Lord Howard’s son, Alex, takes an interest in her, and as a former addict, she finds herself drawn to him. Unfortunately for them, she isn't easy to scare and she also has a motive for wanting to stay at Highwood Hall.

The more we learn about the two women, the more their inner worlds become nuanced, and the more difficult it becomes to accurately determine who’s really good and bad between the two of them. David Ben Efraim is a book reviewer living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and co-owner of Bookwormex, as well as the Quick Book Reviews blog, along with Yakov Ben Efraim. The strict housekeeper, Mrs Huxley, watches her every move, emerging from the shadows when least expected. In the Prologue, an unnamed maid worries about being arrested after a body is found in the house where she works.

However, Freida McFadden manages to challenge expectations, making The Housemaid one of the more agitated and nail-biting thrillers I’ve had the pleasure of reading recently.

Almost a year later, Millie interviews for a job at another household, with a woman to whom Nina recommended her. Nina and Cecelia move to California, while Millie lives off money that Nina sends her after Andrew’s death. They have a great time and drink too much at dinner afterward, so they stay at a hotel in the city overnight.
