Because Lovecraft was a terrible businessman and left no heirs to his intellectual property, all of his works are already in the public domain. While put forward as posthumous collaborations while Derleth was alive, the status of these works as collaborations with Lovecraft was swiftly disputed after his death. providing us with nail-biting scenes of exploration and horror, and tying it all together (albeit loosely) into his infamous Cthulhu mythos.

I finished reading Jane Austen’s seven large novels not too long ago, and I was astounded by her writing ability. Eventually, he became obsessed with the spooky place, and the locals, who know about but don't speak of spooky things, shunned him. But in Lovecraft's case, not only do we barely ever glimpse his infamous creatures, but whenever we DO catch a fleeting glimpse our protagonists -who are narrating these encounters -faint. R. James) becomes involved in a controversy surrounding strange, seemingly extraterrestrial sightings. All the familiar names are here: Cthulhu, Hastur, Shub-Niggurath, Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth, Dagon, etc. This time it’s that of the K'n-yan, an underground civilization with an above-ground portal that’s hidden by a mound of earth. The Shadow Out of Time is most notable for delving so thoroughly into Yithian culture and history, explaining their original cosmic purpose: to study all forms of civilization throughout space and time. Zamacona happened upon the K'n-yanians during an expedition nearly 400 years prior, when they welcomed him as one of their own. Many of the papers were deposited in the library a few months after Lovecraft's death in 1937; others have been added by gift and purchase over the years. For these reasons, I officially converted to sun worship about a week after I first read the book; getting out of the realm of the whack and back to some sensible religious roots. Then he died under mysterious circumstances that everybody knew was because of the spooky thing, but nobody would admit. I have serval collections of Lovecraft's stories but I was looking for something easy to hold, read and carry with me on the bus, at the gym or just sitting back on a cloudy, misty day. Indeed, Shadow Out of Time is one of Lovecraft’s few works in which the alien or monster species is not portrayed as outright malevolent — a rare reprieve from his usual xenophobic sentiments. His fiction marry gothic horror with cosmic fantasy, from his early macabre stories to his tales of the dreamlands, and of course, his famous Cthulhu novellas, and have influenced authors from Stephen King to Neil Gaiman.
