Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic was highly positive about the record in his four-star review, saying, " As You Were doesn't sound retro even though it is, in essence, a throwback to a throwback -- a re-articulation of Liam's '90s obsession with the '60s. On my system at least the sound is a little bright, most noticeably on the album opener - Wall of glass, needed to back the treble off to get Liam's vocals in check. He's even given some AI-generated Oasis music his stamp of approval - but nothing could match up to the real thing, of course. I hibernate and sing while gathering my wings“ from the song “I’ve All I Need” references when Liam went to meet Yoko Ono in America, she had a big banner in her kitchen with an inscription that read “While I’ve been hibernating, I’ve been gathering my wings.

Liam Gallagher's As You Were charges in at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart and sets new vinyl record". According to the Official Charts Company, it is the third fastest-selling album of 2017 behind Ed Sheeran’s ÷ and Rag'n'Bone Man’s Human. Liam has also confirmed that he will perform 'naughty' Oasis B-sides'Half The World Away' and 'Cloudburst' on the tour.Pressing: about 140-160g weight i'd say, nice weight, totally flat, brilliant solid white in colour, Nice sleeve, like the pre crumpled effect, matt finish, thick inner sleeve with the lyrics printed on one side. The laconic “Universal Gleam” feels like his promise to keep on playing this role for fans, a middle-aged “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” about his ability to galvanize and reflect unheard lives (“I’ll help you fix your broken dreams/I’ll give you something you can shout about/I won’t ever let you down”). The track listing was revealed by Gallagher with the release of the album's second single "Chinatown". Liam will perform the album in its entirety on the 12-date arena tour, which commences in Sheffield on Saturday 1st June. With the album’s jacket looking like some fragile paper 45 rpm sleeve from the mid 60’s, Liam Gallagher has no trouble paying homage to his heroes either, spouting out lines such as She’s so ‘purple haze’ … Angels ‘gimmie shelter along with several more that are a delight to hear stumbling from your speakers, and all released on the same week as Oasis’ infamous What’s The Story Morning Glory, where it seems that he too does nothing that’s not planned or considered.

Angels, give me shelter“ from the song: “You Better Run” references The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter. In part for his work on the album, producer Greg Kurstin also won the 2018 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Liam is set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Oasis' debut album 'Definitely Maybe' by embarking on a headline UK and Ireland tour in June 2024.

I think the 'real' charts don't start until position 50 these days, there by musical merit, the top 20 is there due to advertising, PR, marketing to the kids etc (sure it's always been that way but there used to be some semblance of trying to keep it real). There are six solo compositions on his debut, and they are fine, lusty belters with lovely sensitive touches. A critical and commercial success, the album debuted at number one in the UK, outselling the rest of the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart combined and achieving gold certification in its first week. The songs “Paper Crown,” “It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way,” and “Come Back To Me,” as well as the lead single “Wall of Glass,” were produced by Greg Kurstin. The album spawned the singles ‘Wall Of Glass’, ‘Chinatown’, ‘For What It’s Worth’, ‘Come Back To Me’ and ‘Paper Crown’.

With Noel taking over all songwriting duties, Liam was the newly-christened Oasis’ charismatic frontman. A wicked insult to scar or otherwise mentally harm your brother, enemy, troll, fag, loser, low-life or whoever it is you are arguing/disagreeing with. It wasn’t his jabs at older brother Noel (“that cunt”) that orbited Twitter, but signs of a more meditative outlook. And although the gooey “I’ve All I Need” apparently takes its lyrics from inspirational quote montages (“Tomorrow never knows/The winds of change must blow”), as a tribute to his girlfriend’s unwavering support, it’s unusually vulnerable.

Most impressive, however, is the reminder of Gallagher’s singular talent for making mid-paced album tracks feel like stadium anthems. But given that rock’n’roll transformed Liam’s life, it’s not surprising that he takes his self-appointed role as its last protector very seriously, though his staunch commitment to Real Rock Music over the last 25 years makes As You Were an interesting contradiction. His debut solo album As You Were became the fastest-selling vinyl album in over 20 years upon its release, and racked up 103,000 combined sales overall in its opening week in October 2017, outselling the rest of the Official Albums Chart Top 10 combined that week. Rex (“You Better Run”), self-referential Oasis nods (“For What It’s Worth” sounds like “ Stand by Me”). Liam and Noel supposedly haven't spoken in the 10 years since that backstage fight killed off a superband and a brotherhood.

Having released two albums starting with his debut album 'As You Were' in 2017 and follow-up 'Why Me? Why Not’ (2019), saw him reunite with the same songwriting team and went straight to Number 1 in the album chart, outselling the rest of the Top 10 combined. The filmmakers, along with Liam and his mum, then spend the rest of the run time trying to convince us that he's a changed man and is actually devoted to his family and to his craft. Other notable Oasis songwriting contributions by Liam Gallagher include ‘Love Like A Bomb’ (co-written with Gem Archer), ‘The Meaning Of Soul’, ‘Guess God Thinks I’m Abel’, ‘I’m Outta Time’ and ‘Ain’t Got Nothin’’.

Lead single “Wall of Glass” is easily the record’s best song, cresting on a big, hairy harmonica blast that leers with intent.
