Ziggy Stardust blazed briefly but intensely, and I am delighted to see his life and times as a rock’n’roll star immortalised in this book,” Bowie wrote of the first edition. Morgen suggests, probably justly, that Bowie’s great period probably came to an end with the 70s, but that his intellectual curiosity and creativity continued to have something heroic and magnificent as the years continued to go by. The re-recording is a glam rock song that uses melodic and harmonic hooks, as well as percussion and guitar influenced by heavy metal. The Publisher’s Copies feature an authentication page stamped by the David Bowie Estate with an exclusive 8″ x 10″ photographic print by Mick Rock (not previously included in Moonage Daydream.

It is a new, uncut large format edition, released to coincide with the launch of the documentary movie Moonage Daydream by Brett Morgen and an exhibition of Mick Rock’s photos at Atlas Gallery, London. It was also performed during the tour's final concert at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, on 3 July 1973, where Bowie announced: "This is the last show we'll ever do. My personal favourite moment in the process was finding material of the 1975 Soul tour [which] I didn't know was in existence," he adds. This updated version is an exceptional visual feast to the eyes; it is a huge art book, with 328 pages and approx 600 images presented in a luscious blue cloth binding, finished with gold lightning flashes, and a really eye-catching cover image. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars made Bowie a household name and left a milestone on the highway of popular music, rewriting the terms of the performer's contract with his audience and ushering in a new approach to rock's relationship with artifice and theatre that permanently altered the cultural aesthetic of the twentieth century.

Morgen, who also made the 2015 film Cobain: Montage of Heck, about the life and death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, premiered the new film this week at the Cannes Film Festival - and danced on the red carpet to Bowie's music. Ziggy also praises the virtues of "the church of man, love" (or heard as "the church of man-love"); Pegg believes that this line is inspired in part by the proposed "Church of God, Love and Man" by philosopher Thomas Paine, who Bowie often referenced indirectly (and directly on the 1990 Adrian Belew collaboration "Pretty Pink Rose").The re-recorded version was released as the third track on Bowie's fifth studio album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, between "Soul Love" and " Starman", on 16June 1972 by RCA Records.
