About this deal

Also some very crude national stereotypes (which to be fair has always been the case but particularly glaring here). There are the expected outrageous and enjoyable puns, but, why bother to plough through nearly 600 pages?

Mount! by Jilly Cooper | Goodreads Mount! by Jilly Cooper | Goodreads

features Rupert’s great-great-great-great-grandfather in a thrilling race across the country, which will remind many of Georgette Heyer’s wonderful romances. There is also a cast of animals that runs to six pages, including “BLOOD RIVER: A South African First Season Sire in love with the vet”. We are meant to be worried about the (negligible) risks he took, boo and hiss at the evilness of his enemies, and shout "hoorah for Rupert" when he wins at life.

In the Camilla Long interview there was quite a bit about how she'd had to support her family pretty much always - well Leo I mean. As a 14-year-old fan I was frankly astounded that such a thing as a vulgar garden could exist, but apparently it can.

I also think that Jilly's extreme cleverness and powers of observation have outed themselves surreptitiously in the plot, if not the gush.Forester, Taggie’s rescued greyhound, is based on my own beloved black rescued greyhound, Bluebell, who is a stroke-a-holic and claims divine right to every sofa and bed in the house. Although many of her novels have "spiced up" scenes these do not overshadow a gripping yarn in this novel. Jilly Cooper has a gift for creating memorable characters and she even manages to make the animals in her stories into characters. Rupert Campbell-Black is determined to win the title of Leading Sire for his champion racing stallion Love Rat. The couple had known each other since 1945 (when Jilly Sallitt was about eight), although they did not marry until she was 24 and he was 27. Have read a few interviews with her recently - the Camilla Long one in the times was particularly interesting. The blurb describes Mount as Cooper’s “raciest novel” but, drawing on my imaginary romantic writing expertise, I would suggest not opening with a prolonged horse mating scene, even if you think it would be enlivened by the presence of a former porn star.

Mount! by Jilly Cooper review – daft, boozy joy | Fiction

O’Hara also has to contend with a rivalry of his own – with Cameron Cook, the domineering producer of his programme. In her fresh introduction to a recent edition of How to Stay Married, Cooper compares marriage to “two people rowing across a vast ocean in a tiny boat, sometimes revelling in blue skies and lovely sunsets, sometimes rocked by storms so violent we’d nearly capsized”.

Her husband’s death also brought back, in his obituaries, details of the affair he was revealed in 1990 to have had with a publisher. I felt, however, that Jilly just didn't have the vim and vigour to pursue any social commentary to any degree in this story; I think that she was tired. I had a blissful time staying with trainers and meeting all their horses and the stable staff, and drinking a lot of champagne at the races. Rupert is back - and thanks to some apparent age massaging (the dates don't seem to be canon any more, so just try to overlook this - Young Eddie's age is a particular issue) Rupert is still a flawlessly gorgeous romantic hero, virile and beautiful, in his late fifties.
