About this deal

Once and the two books above are great stories but also explain it in a way that is rewarding to the reader. Another compelling chapter in the life of Felix, hero of the award-winning series of books that began with Once and Then.

Now by Morris Gleitzman | Waterstones

And then one very hot Saturday morning in February, after a couple of hours at my desk still not able to find the event the story needed, I switched on my computer to look at the news. When they don't show up after three years, Felix sets out to find them and meets new friends and new trouble. When I explained that Now would be the third and final book about Felix (as at that stage I thought it would be), and that since finishing Then I’d been haunted by curiosity about how the terrible and sometimes wonderful events of Felix’s childhood would affect the rest of his life, and that I wanted Felix to have an experience late in his life that would give him the chance to lay some of the ghosts and demons and sadness of his childhood to rest, Laura nodded understandingly. What a wonderful story - Felix is a young Jewish boy in WWII Poland sets off from an orphanage to find his missing parents. Y como libro para jóvenes me parece que está muy bien, no huyendo de las cosas desagradables y explicándolas al lector de forma clara y sin maquillar lo que ocurre. Even though NOW is firmly set in the present, there are constant reminders of Felix's past experiences. As the reader, I understood the true significance of events he was seeing and misinterpreting, and at every chapter I kept expecting his naivete to get him killed or captured by the Nazis.

The pacing of this book is incredible – Gleitzman is known in his native Australia for writing funny, goofy contemporary children’s books – and the book’s short paragraphs and use of humor (no, really) will make it super-enticing to boys and non-book-lovers. This story like many of his previous, will introduce you to characters who will become friends with whom you will laugh and cry. He has written for TV, stage, newspapers and magazines but is best-known for his hugely succesful children's books including Two Weeks with the Queen, Bumface and Once.We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. Felix is a clever boy who not only creates his own stories, he also uses the knowledge he has acquired from other stories he is familiar with.

It was very close to the end of the story when I realised the bush fire wasn't just a plot device to add excitement into the story, but an absolutely genius way of showing some parallel between the world war and something that is a bit more relate-able and understandable for us now. It's not quite as heart-wrenching as Then, though I did tear up a few times as Felix relived his nightmare of a past. She said it was an unusual but interesting way to finish Felix’s story and she looked forward to reading it. It talks about death and other things that are sensitive to some people, so I recommend this to young adults.

It will be welcomed by the many Holocaust educators who use Once and the sequels to teach upper primary and lower secondary children and embraced by any reader who loves passionate, moving and brilliant stories. I appreciated the self-denial aspect, but I also thought a child of that age group would've been more intelligent. She is struggling to fit in the small country town, and struggling even more with the weight of her name.
