I think that the whole concept of Boarding Patrols is weird, and I think it goes along with my feelings of the current Kill Team campaign: it seems like it wants to be Space Hulk for all the factions, but they have never gone full Space Hulk (Terminators vs Genestealers.With a new influx of power from Vashtorr, the Black Legion now congregates in powerful Balefleets to scour the galaxy for the keys that will set the daemonic forgemaster’s plan in motion. The Sternguard exist to anchor the force with potent ranged firepower, and the Eradicators are for melting bulkheads and heavy opposition. Two of the sets are made for actual boarding actions, while the other box is just more of a normal battleforce for Chaos with plenty (including the new Daemon Prince and older Heldrake model) that you won’t be able to use in boarding actions. Plus, getting a crack at an Abaddon model in a bundle deal may be pretty clutch for some players as well!

I got good use out of the Heavy Support exemption for Space Marines which allows us to take a single Heavy Support choice if they’re Hellblasters or Eradicators.They’re based on a larger 40mm base because they’re intended to be a proxy for Heavy Intercessors, but I could only fit them in as Veteran Intercessors in this list. Based on the few tips we know about Boarding Actions so far, I would say that the Marine Box is poised to be a surprisingly effective force — with the right back-up.

The first volume in the galaxy-quaking Arks of Omen series, this book sets the narrative as Vashtorr provides Abaddon with the means to raise his terrible Balefleets. I also felt that in a whole force of high-speed operator-ass types, a sprinkle of classic Astarte style is still warranted. Instead, we mostly have mono-wargear squads that are much easier to handle in gameplay, but somewhat less interesting to unbox. I suppose if you bought two of these Boarding Patrols, you could come up with Terminators vs Genestealers Space Hulk battle, but only on a limited scale. Maybe as a “final boss” sort of fight where you play on a double sized map with 1000 points per side?I jest, but space marines done slightly differently are both the most milquetoast version of your guys, and the most time honored one. The idea of Flesh Hounds rampaging down a corridor alongside Karanak is awesome, so we allow Chaos Daemons to take a Flesh Hounds unit despite them being Fast Attack. The Tyranids aren’t terribly bothered by the exact state of galactic geopolitics at present – they just like a ready supply of tasty biomass, and a space hulk to ride around in. So, if you were thinking about grabbing all the units inside, you might as well pick them up this way and save some cash.
