It is also clear that he would not give a toss, or indeed anything much coarser, about this opinion. We crested the saddle just as the warm sunshine hit the ridgeline and took in the spectacular view in front of us.

In 2004 Steve Westaby was featured in the BBC documentary Your Life in Their Hands which is a long-running series on the subject of surgery. Earlier in the year I read and enjoyed the author's first part of his memoirs (Fragile Lives), and found it very emotional. My concern was that I would ultimately have to take the device with me and it would keep pinging the rangers with my location and not the women’s location.

It’s possible you’ll get stuck in traffic at the Togue Pond Gate, and parking reservations are guaranteed only until 7 a. The book also touches on the history of groundbreaking heart surgeries from the 1970s to present, so I found it odd that Christ Barnard, the South African doctor that performed the first heart transplant was not mentioned at all. In the first volume of his memoirs, Fragile Lives, he describes being plucked from the pub to assist in repairing an aorta torn in a road traffic accident. Unfortunately, this was also when I realized that the batteries in both my GoPro *and* Sony Action Cam had died. If we are more realistic in our approach to this noble Profession acknowledging the obstacles, we can ultimately become the paragon of perfection that drove us to Medicine in the first place.

Much of the Mount Katahdin hike is in maximum exposure and the weather can change quickly, so be sure to have at least two quarts of water, a working flashlight, durable hiking boots, rain gear and extra clothing, a detailed map, high-energy foods, and first-aid supplies. As a now-motivated reader I would have immediately done something on putting this book down to throw my support behind it. It sounds like you both made some really smart decisions throughout the trip with getting turned around, timing, etc. In this somewhat tepid follow-up to Fragile Lives, Westaby’s bravado leaves a bad taste and dilutes the work’s ostensibly confessional nature. The author has lost faith in the NHS as the priority has become cost justification rather than saving lives and that health professionals are so pushed to the limits that there is no longer time for proper care.

This is definitely worth the read but be prepared, its not always an easy book for a layman to get through. During his 35 year career as a surgeon he worked at several of the UK’s top hospitals and performed over 11,000 heart operations. I’m ridiculously scared of heights, so I get shaky and clumsy at the slightest hint of exposure, which is obviously the least helpful reaction to have. Apparently there were so many mountains goats in this area earlier in the year they had to airlift multiple goats out of here because they were becoming aggressive with hikers. We all hope to meet such a skilled doctor when we are sick, but what about personal growth and medical perspectives?By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. And once you reach the Chimney Pond Trail, the hiking eases up considerably, with flatter terrain and lovely bridges. So widespread was the problem that the Johns Hopkins Hospital carried out the study of divorce as an occupational hazard in Medicine.

Most of our day’s route would take place on the back side of the ridge, so we actually couldn’t see where we were going until we crested the saddle. It’s possible you’ll even meet folks completing the incredible 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail thru-hike, as Mount Katahdin is the final destination on that route after the Hundred-Mile Wilderness. As per the author, the best of them (naturally including himself) should see their work as “an emotionless, technical exercise, comparable with lifting the bonnet of an automobile and repairing the engine. To make things worse, we had no cell phone service until we hit White Pass, so our mom’s would have had no idea what happened for at least 24 hours. We even had to cross a substantial snow field which I guess at this point I should not be surprised by. The Knife’s Edge is a beautifully crafted book by an equally crafty cardiac surgeon, Professor Stephen Westaby. Once in it, you're sucked deeper and deeper, and I struggled to leave the hospital in case something remarkable happened, and I missed it.
