Gortenfern beach is equally stunning and a great place for a picnic, beach-combing and exploring the rocky coastline. Grant tapping Lloyd as the murderer is handy because Grant had merely approached him for expert advice, so having a suspect thrust under his nose is most fortunate. Re-reading this novel it was interesting to see how Grant’s affliction is presented as the opposite of himself. The secluded beach is one of the most beautiful on Islay, with bright turquoise, clean, and crystal clear water and golden sand that contrasts the black, craggy sea cliffs. It definitely does shed a different light on the state of the book and why there is quite a focus on Inspector Grant recovering from his not easily visible illness.

There is a car park located 50 yards before the Carraig Fhada Lighthouse, and from there it’s a five-minute walk to the beach. Puzzle focused readers will probably not enjoy this novel and will inevitably find the ending unsatisfying, as it is one which requires an epistle to fill in the gaps of the mystery. In 2019, Evie Jeffrey discussed Tey's engagement with capital punishment debates in A Shilling for Candles and To Love and Be Wise.

Mary Miley's The Impersonator (2013) has a plot very similar to that of Brat Farrar, with the story transferred to 1920s America.Inspector Grant’s feelings of being unmanned are further demonstrated in how his work colleagues regard his problem, as Inspector Grant notes a loss of hero worship from his sergeant and he describes himself at this point as a ‘poor nerve ridden creature at the mercy of non-existent demons.

Furthermore in some ways Inspector Grant perceives his illness as a feminising of himself (with the feminine being aligned with weakness at this juncture). Josephine Tey was a pseudonym used by Elizabeth MacKintosh (25 July 1896 – 13 February 1952), a Scottish author.

Keep right on the coastal track and cross a wooden bridge, ignoring a path ascending on your left to a hydro-electric station. All walking is potentially dangerous and it is your responsibility to ensure that you are properly dressed and equipped, have a map and compass, have checked and planned your route in advance and are able to navigate effectively. Continue to the end of the track where a raised path allows you to reach the base of the lighthouse, unless the tide is very high. I think Miss Pym Disposes is one of Tey’s most marmite books as people either seem to love it or hate it, depending on how they respond to Miss Pym.
