The extras include a quartet of 5-10 minute Featurettes - Cleared for Take-Off, which looks predominantly at the training (Cruise-led) to be flight-ready; Breaking New Ground - Filming Top Gun: Maverick, which looks at the technological marvels required to capture the aerial footage; A Love Letter to Aviation, which focusses on Cruise's personal love for flying; and Forging the Darkstar, which looks at how they staged this sequence. The Ultra HD Blu-ray delivers an utterly reference native 4K presentation, perfect in every way, with added Dolby Vision HDR and expanded IMAX-enhanced sequences. And in each case, they’ve seemed loath to acknowledge the most obvious aspect of Top Gun: Maverick: This is a nearly perfect film.

Top Gun follows the far-too-reckless and dangerous Naval Aviator Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (played to iconic perfection by Tom Cruise) through an unexpected journey of deep self-reflection. All the while, a thunderous, authoritative low-end provides a robust, wall-rattling impact to every explosion and boom, digging as low as 10Hz and 12Hz on several occasions ( bass chart). After some arduous back-and-forth testing against its Blu-ray compatriots, including the accompanying new Blu-ray disc, the end results don't quite place the encode in the top one percent, but it is nonetheless an appreciable advancement and the best the film has ever looked. We learn about the specifics of the story and the route planned ahead along with Maverick, and the mission to destroy an unsanctioned uranium enrichment plant makes for a great MacGuffin. It was shot using Sony Venice cameras with an array of Lenses (including Sigma, Arri, Fujifilm, Zeiss, Canon, Premier, with optical extenders reportedly akin to rifle scopes to track aircraft in the distance), captured at 6K source format with a 4K master format Digital Intermediate. The possible reason for why it is more apparent now is due to the higher resolution levels and our relative distance to the character as he speaks; we can better now see James Tolkan's lip movement than in previous video editions.

The welcomed twist in all this is that "Iceman" (Val Kilmer) has moved up the ranks over the years to Admiral while always protecting his formal rival from being grounded. Extras: Language(s): English, Top Gun: French - Parisian, German, Italian, Portuguese - Brazilian, Russian, Spanish - Castilian, Spanish - Latin American, Top Gun: Maverick: Czech, French - Canadian, Hungarian, Polish, Top Gun: Japanese, Hard of Hearing Subtitles: English, Subtitles: Top Gun: English, Chinese - Cantonese - Hong Kong, Chinese - Mandarin - Simplified (PRC), Chinese - Mandarin - Traditional (Taiwan/Singapore), Czech. The classic fan favorite flies into the 4K Ultra HD danger zone with an excellent Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos presentation, making it the best home video edition. These opening moments are truly worth admiring from a plot structure perspective as exposition is cleverly and concisely delivered. Unfortunately we lost director Tony Scott several years ago, but his “replacement” Joe Kosinski, does a fine job of taking the reigns.

After thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN's elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it. In addition to breaking box office totals, audiences have felt the need for speed and made the legacy sequel Paramount’s highest-grossing film ever and Cruise's highest-grossing film in his entire illustrious career.
