From the trials of being a diabetic with a sweet tooth to his teenage battles with obesity, to the joy of cooking and the power of food to bring us together, this is a wonderful, hilarious and heart-warming memoir of a delightful obsession. Also, weirdly given how much he’s spoken about it in his standup, but I almost wish he has spoken more about his diabetes - it’s right at the last chapter, but it would’ve been interesting to read how he was handling that while also munching through 4 pizzas in one day. There's a trend moving through British comedians at the moment, of "memoirs" written through the lens of another topic.

Do you feel weighed down by stress and pressure, held back by judgement and lack of opportunity, and critcised by everyone – including yourself? I like Ed, both his stand up comedy and the Off Menu podcast really appeal to me, but this book felt a little bit performative/surface level.If you want a memoir, or to get beyond the public comedian, or to learn more about Gamble, you won't find those things here. While my story differs from Ed's, I too think about the next meal all the time, think if I'm gonna eat something unhealthy I want to eat the best thing. You're not going to get anything revolutionary or out there, but he's an amiable and funny presence to spend some time with, so this is one where the audiobook is probably your best bet. If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4.

Ed has featured in stand-up appearances on Live at the Apollo, The Royal Variety Performance, The Russell Howard Hour, and on the US TV show Conan.Sometimes I struggle with autobiographies and they take me forever to read, but with this one it was far from the case. star rating as I’m not a huge foodie myself - however I am an Ed Gamble fan so thought I’d give the book a go.
