Description

I've played Mario 64 with several different controllers since, and it has never felt as good when not on an N64 pad. I love that N64 mode is actually recognized by the Switch as an N64 controller as it displays the controller you’re using as the official Nintendo brand unit.

It works wonderfully on the Switch as well, so awkward controls with the NSO N64 lineup are a thing of the past. This is a wireless N64 controller that comes with a module that attaches into your controller port on your console.

The controller’s analogue stick is intuitively designed to emulate the original N64 thumb stick with a more new age feel. If you hook up a Switch Pro controller to a PC, however, then Steam will offer you configuration support. Remember that your PC won't explicitly recognize the controller as a Nintendo 64 one but merely as a generic gamepad. What we like is that they use some very nice, tactile buttons that are thick enough for adult fingers to press.

This controller features a much slimmer, more compact nature and if you look closely, the analogue stick closely resembles the original too! We’ve been playing with this for months now and it’s one of the best N64 controllers for a good reason. It’s hard to make Mario run and jump properly with the YXBA layout we’ve had since SNES, at least with the way I use my thumb.

On top of all that, it can also be used on a PC by plugging it into a USB port, which opens up the options for the controller even further still. Many current hardware manufacturers have created their gamepads in the Nintendo 64 controller's style but with a simple USB connector on the cord instead of the original connector.

The best thing about the controller was that it seemed perfectly designed for the games released on the N64 console. Depending on your play style and what you’re looking for in a controller, all of the options on this list should help you find the perfect N64 controller to play with.

The controllers are meant to be used with the Nintendo Online system, a set of hundreds of free emulated games thrown in when you subscribe to the Switch’s online multiplayer.

Each controller port has its own firmware chip so multiple firmware versions can be used if desired. The wire itself is over 10ft long, you have dual “Z” triggers, a comfortable form factor and a big grippy thumbstick. The controller requires a wired adapter to be able to be used on PC (See Hardware), and even then, depending on the adapter used, it can work as either an DirectInput device or an XInput device. Generic USB controller, this uses a standard USB port, if your program or application accepts USB controller input, it can be used natively without drivers or patches, JUST PLUG AND PLAY!This makes it great for playing your favorite Nintendo 64 games wherever you want, including on the best N64 emulator. Or if you boot up games in Big Picture mode with the controller connected, you'll get over-the-game remapping features.
