Description

You should use coffee that is ground to a medium coarse setting. If you are familiar with the feel of various coffee grounds it should be finer than a cafetiere setting and coarser than an Aeropress or Moka pot. A final reason to buy is that it’s easy to keep clean – its filter holder and jug can be rinsed under the tap and are dishwasher safe, plus a drip-stop feature means no splashes on the hotplate. Taste - There will be a difference in taste, moreso body of the coffee. A paper filter will stop many of the soluble oils entering the coffee as well as any fine grounds reusulting in a cleaner cup which is great for lighter roasts or more complex coffees. A permanent filter is usually stainless steel or plastic with tiny holes. The end result will be a more full bodied coffee which is great if you’re a fan of rich darker notes in your brew. Plunge slowly and steadily, holding the handle with one hand, and the plunger with the other. Don’t plunge too fast or some of the grounds can escape the strainer, or the coffee can spurt out of the spout. The best filter coffee machines you can buy in 2023 1. Melitta Look V Timer: Best filter coffee machine

When narrowing down which filter coffee machines to consider you can first look at the type of coffee machine jug that will best suit your needs. Glass jugs are the traditional and most common type of jug, these give great visibility of the coffee in the pot but are prone to breaking if dropped or damaged. Stainless steel coffee jugs however will not break and have the added benefit of keeping your coffee warmer, although most filter coffee machines do also include a heating plate to keep coffee warm. At Melitta we also sell coffee filter machines with insulated jugs, these are ideal if you want to keep your coffee warm for a longer period of time. Timer Function

The answer to this question very much depends on the brand and model of your water filter jug. It also depends on how often you’re using it. Some water filters come with indicators to let you know it’s time to change it, which is useful. But, all new water filters will let you know how long the filter is supposed to last, this is typically displayed in months and filters can last anywhere from two to six months.

Key specs – Size: 24 x 21 x 33.5cm (WDH); Type: standard filter; Features: 15-minute auto-off, 20, 40 and 60-minute keep warm programmes This is the filter coffee machine you’re probably most familiar with. Fill the tank with water, pop a paper filter and ground coffee in and turn it on. More affordable machines use glass jugs and keep them warm with a hot plate underneath, while pricier models swap the glass pot and hotplate for an insulated jug. These tend to be the cheapest automatic machine, but the quality of coffee produced is variable. 2. Pour-over machines While they look like drip-brew machines, these work by automating the more involved coffee-making process of the manual pour-over drippers. Rather than constantly dripping hot water over the coffee like cheaper machines, pour-over models dispense water more gradually over the coffee grounds. Some deliver water initially to allow the coffee to ‘bloom’ before dispensing the rest. The process takes longer but results in a more flavourful cup. 3. Grind and brew machineA classic method for brewing tasty coffee, filter is a sure-fire way to get a smooth and highly drinkable cup of the good stuff, with minimum fuss. Environment - There is obviously the waste factor when throwing away a coffee filter rather than just cleaning out a plastic of stainless steel permanent filter. Most paper filters however are biodegradable so you can just throw them onto your compost pile along with the nutritious coffee. To keep your coffee tasting flawless, regular cleaning and descaling is essential. Many of our filter coffee machines have descaling displays and descaling programmes. These alert you when you need to carry out a descale of the machine. By regularly descaling your filter coffee machine you can prolong its life and ensure the perfect tasting brew every time.

Add the coffee to the base of the heatproof jug – 1 tbsp per cup you want to make. This is about 7g, so for an 8 cup cafetière you need 50-60g (depending on how strong you like it). You can weigh this out on digital scales or using a measuring spoon. If you’re not filling the whole cafetière (making 8 cups), use 125ml water per 1 tbsp coffee ground for every cup you want to make. The removable 1.25-litre water tank is a nice addition, so you don’t have to fill the carafe from the tap then decant into the machine, and the descaling light reminds you to banish limescale buildup on a regular basis. There’s also a strength adjuster, AromaSelector, on the top of the machine but we found it to be more effective when brewing smaller amounts of coffee – at its full capacity of 10 large cups (125ml) or 15 small cups (85ml) it made little difference to the flavour. The glass can break, but replacements are widely available. The plastic or metal handle and plunger are reusable. Our filter coffee machines vary in capacity to suit the needs of all households, some can produce up to 10 cups of coffee for busier households, others have a smaller capacity making them ideal for compact kitchens. For those who want the freshest cup of filter coffee with the least effort, a grind and brew machine may be the answer. These come equipped with an integrated bean hopper and grinder that will produce ground coffee on demand, depositing it directly into the filter basket. Most allow you to adjust the grind from fine to coarse so you can vary the strength and flavour, or you can still use pre-ground coffee. These machines tend to be a little pricier, though. 5. Manual drip coffee maker Although filter coffee machines are seen as more simplistic there are many options and features to consider when selecting the ideal fit for your household. Jug type
