Actually, I've got probably three copies of the book-one for my office, one-well, I like being able to hand out a copy to someone that-a good friend that perhaps needs it. The full title of the book is “Dressing the man – mastering the art of permanent fashion” and content-wise this is quite different from books covered in recent reviews. He’s long abandoned the “dapper” look, and no longer tries to dress like a character in a French New Wave film.

In fact, he's even got [Laughs] almost kind the kind of a centerfold pullout but it's more in fabrics than it is on [Laughs] what normally you would see on a…on a centerfold. I learned from other people’s experiences and was careful not to get hung up on labels or ideas about ‘quality. After graduating from college, he relocated to San Francisco, where he found himself sifting through the racks of discounted, second-hand designer clothes at Wasteland. So, he wants you to focus on something like how a jacket should fit and how you could tell if something's a bit tight here in the midsection.I studied the Science of Style in London, Hong Kong, and Bangkok and have created over 5000 videos/ articles to help men dress better. Going by the illustrations and people included in the book, much of the content is likely most relevant if you move in swanky New England circles, have stacks of money, and maybe even lived 60 years ago. So, he lays a very solid case as it-and this takes me to the other thing I love about this-a lot of pictures. So, each of the chapters-and I like how he really gets down to talking about things like proportion and color, things that a lot of men don't even understand. It was published in 2002, about a decade after Levi’s promoted the idea of Casual Friday to help sell their line of downmarket chinos, and a few years before the hashtag menswear movement, which ultimately died around 2015.

Alan Flusser’s Dressing the Man is widely considered to be the single best book on how to wear tailored clothing. Like everyone, I’ve noticed that guys such as Ethan Newton and Simon Crompton have been wearing Western denim shirts, often with tweed. Easily one of the top books written on Men's Style, Dressing the Man was an instant classic when it was released a decade ago because it focused on a timeless style – which makes this book as relevant today as it was in 2003. I’ve since bought two more pairs of Needles pants — a pair of velvet climbing pants with a dark brown paisley pattern, and then a pair of faux-leather, python-embossed pants. All of these books revolve around the idea that you can dress in a relatively timeless and flattering way if you pay attention to some ideas about fit, proportions, and color. The rest of your style journey will be a lot like life: you might start with a plan, but then things might deviate.

At around 30 pounds it’s not a cheap book, but given the timelessness of the content maybe it has enduring value? If you’re looking for more general tips on how to upgrade your daily, more casual style, it has less to offer.

And everything he talks about, you know, is timeless fashion in which he's very clear…is not the same.

So, there were two that I can just think of right off the top of my head that would complement this book. Written by the acclaimed menswear critic Alan Flusser, Dressing the Man moves away from trends and focuses on helping you create a timeless wardrobe that will look as stylish today as it will five, 10 or even 30 years from now. And the difference, he's very clear, is that style is about knowing your body type, about knowing what colors suit you, what clothing styles suit you. He’s an avid motorcyclist, drives a Yamaha Scrambler 950cc, and attends warehouse parties on weekends.I haven’t read through it from start to finish, but I have already learnt interesting things I had no idea from before. Or, if he wants to show you color, of course, or the texture of a fabric, he brings in a large, really just great photo.
