Kodak has a long history of making incredible slide film, and recent history has seen the brand reintroduce their well-loved Ektachrome ( to much deserved fanfare). Let’s talk about that. Ektachrome E100 The downside is that if you underexpose the image, the colors can turn muddy and if you overexpose the image, the colors give off a more pastel and washed out vibe. Muddy colors are difficult to work with, however, if you’re going for a pastel/washed-out look, you can work with overexposing Kodak Ektar 100.

As far as Fujicolor 160NS, I think Pro Neg. Hi is a much closer starting point than Classic Chrome. Obviously this recipe is much too warm, unless one was using a warming filter or had a radioactive-coated lens. And too much contrast, too. Again, there are so many variables, and it’s difficult to nail down exactly what one film “looks like”. That’s obviously a pretty big challenge, but I’m always trying to get the general feeling “right” if I can. When the sun is really shining and there isn’t any cloud coverage, one of our top choices would be to load a roll of Kodak Ektar 35mm or medium format film. If you grew up between the 1980s and early 2000s, chances are you’ve either shot or had your picture taken with Kodak Gold 200. This mid-speed film has been a favorite of consumers and adventurous professionals alike, mostly for its tendency to punch above its weight when it comes to image quality.Recent years have seen significant price increases in every aspect of shooting film, so we’re not surprised to see the price of Ektar 100 rising, too. We just wish it hadn’t caught all the way up with the prices of other comparable films. Although Ektar 100 is a recently released film from Kodak, only slightly older than the latest Portra films, it has long a heritage. The name Ektar has been used by Kodak on various products for the last century. Starting in the 1930s and going through the 1960s Ektar was a name applied to a range of pro lenses for the 2"x3" format. My first exposure to the name was with the 2x3 Graflex I used for a few years which had a Kodak Ektar 107mm f/3.7 lens. Later Kodak reimagined the name for a range of color negative films introduced in the late 1980s in several flavors including 25, 125, and 1000 speeds. All promising fine grain and vivid color rendition. Kodak produced those films for about a decade but have long been discontinued.

Another downside to Kodak Ektar 100 is that this particular film has a much lower exposure latitude than comparable options. Last in the Portra line is Portra 800, Kodak’s higher speed color negative offering. In some ways, Portra 800 is a bit redundant considering Portra 400’s exposure latitude covers nearly all of Portra 800’s effective range. But Portra 800 is another spectacular option when light gets really low, and I find Portra 800 shines particularly when used for this intended application. Kodak claims that the current version of Ektar 100 is “the finest-grain color negative film” available. Ektar is classified as a “professional-grade” film, putting it alongside the ever-popular Kodak Portra.Ektar 100 has really fine grain and that’s one of the things that makes it so popular for landscape photography. Since its introduction in 2008, Ektar has built a reputation as one of Kodak’s premier films. It’s the emulsion that promised to fill the void that the world-famous Kodachrome left in the company’s catalog when it was discontinued. Like Kodachrome, Ektar is slow (ISO 100), fine grained, and has a much sought-after vibrancy in its color palette. But unlike Kodachrome, Ektar is a C-41 color negative film, enabling it to be processed by any film processing lab. All of the points above illustrate exactly why Kodak Ektar 100 is a great choice for landscape photography. The first thing to say about Ektar 100 as this review gets wrapped up is that it’s another film I’ve shot and found myself really liking. It’s a film I’ll certainly be shooting again. The modern Kodak Ektar 100 is a color negative film introduced in 2008 as a successor to the original Ektar. Like that older film, current Kodak Ektar is specialized for applications in which ultra-fine grain and high color saturation are desirable traits. It’s only available as an 100 ISO film (keeps that pesky market unsegmented), but it comes in multiple formats – 35mm, 120 medium format, and in 4×5 and 8×10 sheets.
