Description

The Art of God of War is a graphic love letter of Santa Monica studios to all the fans who absolutely loved playing the game and also to themselves. It chronicles how the art progressed from the time it was conceived to the final touches and even to a place which cannot be accessed in the actual game. This book is a concrete evidence on how much time and artistry they have given a masterpiece, a literary behind-the-scenes documentary for those who wanted more than just playing the game. The God of War (2018) action-adventure video game was developed by Sony Santa Monica Studio (California, USA). It is the eighth installment of a highly successful series, that features the towering Kratos as its iconic protagonist. In God of War 4 the Greek god trades the bloody wars of the Olympus for the tranquility of a Nordic forest, where he lives a quiet life with his son Atreus. Setting out on a quest to deliver the ashes of Atreus' mother to the highest mountain peak in the region, Kratos is soon tasked with something inherently impossible: to keep his son from a life of violence while slashing his way through the throngs of trolls, wood elves, and Norse gods that bar their progress. God of War isn't even my all-time (PS4) favorite game. That belongs to Doom. But I was disappointed with Doom's "The Art of" book because there is one thing it failed to deliver that GoW Art Book succeeded:

The team chose the comic medium for “The Hunt” since it was an ideal tool that could simultaneously visualize components of gameplay and storytelling. The scene is a vertical slice of God of War that I had the creative freedom to visualize how Kratos and his son, Atreus, would begin this new journey. It was great to see the concepts illustrated in The Hunt maintain integrity throughout the development process and the team helped see it into the final game. The reason is just that it somewhat helped me reconnect with the loss of my own mother, which is something that happened when I was a teen, and I had encapsulated that memory to have it as something that wouldn’t affect me at all. Working on this piece made me remember her. I can guess most developers had their little personal moments during the development because the game touches some very primal fibers here and there. The game itself is fantastic, one of the most beautiful games yet to be produced in my opinion (more amazing graphically than even Horizon Zero Dawn on a PS4 Pro which is saying something) and that’s what this book focuses on - the stellar visual design. If you’re a fan of the game, this book touches on the production itself, inspirations, and insights on various character and level designs. Norse mythology is not as well documented as for example Greek or Roman as used for inspiration in previous games in the series, and the book talks about the challenges of starting with very little in terms of source materials which was interesting considering how well it turned out.

The game is one of the best games out there, and this artbook is one of the best video game artbooks this year. The Art of God of War is an absolute masterpiece. As a fan of the God of War franchise, I was blown away by the stunning artwork and detailed commentary that this book offers. The illustrations are breathtaking, with incredible attention to detail and a real sense of mood and atmosphere. The concept art and sketches give a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, and it's amazing to see how the characters, creatures, and landscapes of the game were brought to life. But what really sets this book apart is the commentary. The insights from the development team provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of God of War, from the early brainstorming sessions to the final touches on the game. The interviews and anecdotes give a real sense of the passion and dedication that went into creating this masterpiece.
