Lastly, it’s more power efficient and can more easily run off of a powerbank and birdcord (the Syntakt will require a more potent PD-compatible powerbank). Over the last few decades, as old and new electronic instruments makers alike returned to analogue technology, Roland hardly blinked. Firmly committed to exploring the frontiers of digital technology, Roland CEO Jun-ichi Miki, who also happens to be an engineer, best encapsulated the company’s vision in a 2019 interview on the occasion of the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm release.

Roland MC-101: Transpose You can combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases and even important audio files and input MIDI sequences. I find the Digitone (and A4mk2) to be the most musically inspiring, both in terms of the sonics they give and the melodic approach rather than rhythmic (like the Syntakt). One less piece of gear to carry—an audio interface—is certainly an upside, especially for novice or professional electronic musicians who are travelling with a minimal music setup. Final VerdictNew Projects start with a pre-populated set of Scatters, but you can make your own. The presets demonstrate the more outlandish possibilities but I was keen to make some simpler effects for adding fills, and also to see if you could make sonic changes without the rhythmic side, somewhat like parameter scenes on an Elektron box. I managed to make some simple beat repeats with different speeds and durations, and a high-pass filter that can be held indefinitely. Again, just scratching the surface! USB generic driver mode lets you connect your MC GROOVEBOX directly to a smartphone or tablet, great for producing with Zenbeats app (available on IOS, Android, Windows, and Mac) or your favourite DAW. Roland's MC-101 has been designed for great portability. The compact size and solid design make it easy to take along with you so you can create music wherever you want. With a Digitone (or A4), I can happily sit with it solo and create things I really like, or I can sit with it plugged into my Force/MPC and grab multiple clips/parts that I really like, or have it in the DAW, and, yes, really like what comes out. At the surface level, the Syntakt and MC-101 are both similar in that they’re both an interesting combination of groovebox, drum machine, sequencer, and synthesizer. But they’re also very different from one another.

Specifications So my comparison and reference is these devices - please don't feel offended for your favorite brand if I am doing too many comparisons! This can vary depending on the specifications of the batteries, capacity of the batteries, and the conditions of use. You can sync your imported audio with the Roland MC-101 and process it with the varied built-in effects and tools this awesome Groovebox gear has to offer. Professional Production and Performance

Nevertheless, I have been still searching for a truly portable option. Well this device is just perfect for this and in many ways its beats the two time more expensive Elektron Syntakt while overall leaving too much to be desired from Elektron's workflow. No comparison with Volcas in terms of workflow, even though Volcas sound is unique. In addition to these, the Roland MC-101 GrooveBox features a curated collection of built-in beats, phrases and sounds all put together by renowned artists and expert sound engineers. The MC‑101 and MC‑707 have an almost ridiculously powerful digital synth engine at their heart: Roland's ZEN-Core. Each instance of the synth has four layers ('Partials'), all with their own Oscillator, Filter, VCA, LFOs and Envelopes. Oscillator modes include a classic virtual analogue with many shapes, all of which can be pulse-width modulated. There's also a super saw and a noise mode. Then there's a PCM mode, greatly increasing versatility by allowing sample-and-synthesis sound design. But there's more: Oscillator cross modulation is available between partials 1-2 and 3-4, with X‑Mod, Ring and Sync modes!

Roland MC-101: Working with Control Knobs With its USB connection, you can easily connect the Roland MC-101 to your computer and use it as an advanced USB audio interface. I have an MC707 that I use as a sound module, so that’s my reference. I’ve got a Syntakt too that I’m about to sell.
