Description

Smaller Footprint: A smaller footprint translates to reduced cooling requirements as well as about a two thirds reduction in weight. This offers the installation flexibility needed by many IT departments. The first point to note is that not all UPS manufacturers offer lithium-ion powered UPS systems. Those that do provide limited offers in their UPS ranges. For example, a UPS manufacturer may offer smaller single-phase UPS up to 2-3kVA with lead acid or lithium-ion battery options. These are specific UPS systems designed to work with the respective battery technology and they are not interchangeable. The reason being the unique charging and management characteristics of each type of battery. Prices will also be different with a 20-30% premium being charged for lithium, whether the UPS is an online, line interactive or standby system. A single cabinet configuration of 34.6 kWh comprises one switchgear, one switched mode power supply (SMPS) and 17 battery modules. Li-ion systems are relatively new to the UPS system space, but they can provide a number of key advantages for data center applications. These batteries generally have a higher specific energy/energy density than lead-acid batteries, a longer lifespan, a shorter recharge time, and are capable of completing a larger number of charge/discharge cycles (as many as two or three times more cycles than a lead-acid, depending on the chemical composition of the battery). In Li-ion batteries, the ‘cathode’ is usually a metal oxide, while the anode is usually porous carbon graphite. Both are immersed in a liquid electrolyte made of lithium salt and organic solvent.

The Agents tab links the software agents of multiple devices to allow for a graceful shutdown over IP. In the event of a Power outage, Agents can automatically shut down non-critical equipment to extend battery runtime. Additionally, you can set agents to shut down all equipment as the battery is nearing the end of its runtime. UPS systems are typically built using lead-acid batteries to provide power in case of an outage, but these solutions have not evolved much in the past few years. Data centers increasingly are searching for ways to reduce the size and weight of these systems, reduce cooling requirements, and extend the life of UPS systems while reducing costs.

The 9PX6K-L fits in a 3U chassis sitting at about 81.2 Pounds (VS 106lbs from its Lead Acid counterpart) and measures 5.12″x 17.33″x 28.43″. Eaton offers several options for mounting this unit—the Lithium 9PX ships with a 4-post rail kit and feet for a tower configuration. Eaton also offers a 2-post rail kit that is sold separately.

The Samsung SDI lithium-ion battery system is specifically approved for use with KOHLER Uninterruptible Power’s KOHLER PW 6000 (60-120 kVA), KOHLER PW 9250DPA, 9500DPA and MF series UPS systems. Samsung SDI is one of the most experienced producers of lithium-ion batteries in the world and has a long record of safely supplying systems for use in critical power systems. Both (can) monitor battery terminal temperature and cabinet ambient temperature and can warn of possible thermal runaway conditions They provide a longer lifespan and higher reliability than sealed LA batteries. LA battery rooms must be kept at a reasonably constant temperature (20 -25°C) to avoid reducing service life or even causing damage. Lithium-Ion UPS Batteries

With larger sets this can mean the installation of a sizeable battery within a server room or data centre and if the battery is lead acid, fire suppression should be a key consideration in a risk assessment. If thermal runway were experienced this could lead to fire in the room and the need to evacuate safely and suppress the fire. In addition to a fire suppression system, placing the UPS system and lithium battery set in a separate UPS room that can provide containment of any such and rare issue could help to further reduce the impact of such an event. UPS Battery Recycling Control power: The LG cabinet requires 100V-240VAC single phase power for its BMS and other controls. This power should be 'protected', i.e. derived from the UPS output. Re-Charge Speed: Charging either a li-ion or lead-acid battery to 80% takes roughly the same amount of time. But li-ion systems do have an advantage beyond that charge capacity. Reaching a 100% state of charge for lead acid batteries can take more than five to ten hours, while a li-ion battery can reach that state in 30 minutes to an hour.

The device has an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) to protect the battery from power fluctuations. It also has a built-in surge protector to safeguard your connected devices from abnormal jolts of electricity. As usual, we found the 9PX to be easy to set up and get going. Unbox it, get it a power supply, plug in what we want to be protected, and we were good to go. While there are several management options, we had the network card and that was the easiest method to get management up and going. Truth be told, the 9PX would be fine without these on a one-off basis. That said, for IT admins managing larger Eaton deployments, the variety of management software does add a lot of value when it comes to visualizing and proactively managing these environments. Older handsets are often sold-on to the second-user market and if a battery requires recycling it is important to place this in the correct waste stream and to consider the battery as general waste.Remote trip of the battery cabinet breaker: note that the UPS does NOT generate the shunt trip command for battery breakers (a UPS "load off" or UPS EPO command will shut off the UPS but will not trip the battery breakers in the LG cabinets). The user is responsible for providing +24VDC wiring to each LG cabinet to facilitate a remote shunt trip of the battery cabinet breaker. The Third tab down in the management interface is the controls tab. There is a little to see here, but you can control the power states of the entire UPS and each outlet group. The key difference between a lithium-ion battery and a lead-acid battery is the mix of chemicals used in the electrodes and electrolyte within the battery.
