Description

Each player receives Mind Cards equal to the round number. So if the player’s current level is the 1st round, everyone receives 1 card each with the game getting increasingly harder as it goes. This is a very inexpensive game that you won’t grow tired of anytime soon. If you’re constantly playing with the same group, you might find it slowly becomes a less interesting or varied option, but if you’re mixing in some different people often enough, you’ll want to keep bringing this little gem to the table. Plus, different player amounts feel very different and alter the number of levels for even more variety. Not to mention an expert mode for once you become a true telepath. You basically dictate your own replay value with The Mind. The more you play it with new or different amounts of people, the more it’ll feel new and fresh. If all Bunnies get used before the final round is complete, then you lose the game. But if players get to the final round then they win the game. Once the lives, shuriken, and cards have been dealt, all players focus. When you’re ready, you place your hand on the table. Once all players have placed their hands on the table, play can commence. No communication is allowed between players. They must simply stare at each other and get in sync, to determine the right time to play a card.

The cards included may be confusing at first as the Mind rules are certainly unique, but gameplay will start to make sense as you learn how to play it. Starting the Game Example: Tim, Sarah and Linus place one hand on the table - they are ready. They remove their hands from the table and the game begins. Linus places his card face up in the center of the table, it shows the number 17.

To stop the game at any time, any play can put their hand in the middle of the table. This signifies a “lets take a breath” moment, if anyone wants to break the current cycle and take a beat. In how to play The Mind, it is like a timeout during a basketball game. All players put their hands in, and everyone takes it out to get things going again. This is very much a light filler game. For the moments when you have 30 minutes to spare at the end of a game night or are hanging out with friends. My first game of The Mind was played on a coach trip on the way to Wales. I have played this in a bar and a hotel room. Minimal space is required and the box is small enough that it can be easily transported. I have even been asked by my non-gaming work colleagues to have a game during our lunch break, as they were intrigued by the game. What aroused my curiosity is these awards are usually reserved for some games with serious clout. The Mind didn’t read like this at all. It’s a small box co-operative card game that takes around 20 minutes to play. Some people question whether it is even a game! What is going on? Well, the good news is you can read my review to find out… Gameplay Hi Bradley, thanks for coming by! Interesting perspective, what makes you not want to play it? Is it just that you’d prefer another style of game over this one, when you’re considering what’s going to ultimately hit the table? The team earns more lives and throwing stars when certain levels are completed. Levels and Their Rewards Although The Mind card game is certainly unique in its gameplay, there are other card games that you can play that are also unique too.

Once all cards have been played, the level is complete. All the cards are shuffled and the next level is attempted. On completion of levels two, three, five, six, eight and nine a reward is received, either another life or another shuriken. Harmonised Thinking Or Number Guessing? Also, there are so many important decisions being made by the group, all being made in silence: when to take a calculated risk with a few lives to spare, when to use a precious throwing star because you might be receiving one in an upcoming level, when to call for a moment of refocus so that everyone can catch their breath, when to eventually cave and play your number 98 card because you choose to believe the last card your friend across the table from you is holding is 99 or 100 and not 97. Never has a game made me feel so devastated when I make a wrong decision or so accomplished when I make a right one. And no matter the result, I constantly want to try again. It's always an excellent service with brilliant products at a very competitive price - will use again!

The Mind is cooperative and played over a number of rounds depending on the number of players. In the two player game, you play over 12 rounds, but you only play 10 rounds with three players and 8 rounds with four. Increasing the player count, increases the difficulty. The game says ages 8 plus and that is perfectly reasonable. My 9 and 12 year olds have played this together claiming they’ve managed level 10, although without witnesses and with giant smirks on their faces I’m not entirely convinced! The increasing levels of difficulty build up like a symphony of pressure and tension. The experience is unique. I watched Eric Martin’s preview, and then I read the rules. I have to be honest: I didn’t think the central mechanic would work that well. But it does, and the first time we played it, I found it novel and fascinating. The Mind is one of those highly addictive games that you’ll want to play again and again. In many ways, the experience is similar to the classic Ouija board. It offers a situation ripe for exploitation and allows players to do the heavy lifting and meet it more than halfway. This framework can produce euphoric moments shared between everyone at the table. That sense of exhilarating intoxication is powerful—and many tabletop games never achieve it. Eric Martin: I’ve played The Mind more than thirty times in the first month that I’ve owned it, and I have no doubt that I’ll be introducing it to dozens of other people over the course of the year. The experience of playing it is unlike anything else that I can recall, and it’s a great way to show people how different games can be from what you perceive them to be. You start the game with a number of lives equal to the number of players. In a level, each player receives a hand of cards equal to the number of the level: one card in level 1, two cards in level 2 and so on. Example: Tim, Sarah and Linus play level 2. Each player now has 2 cards in their hand. Each of them places a hand on the table to focus their concentration before play is started. If you have successfully made it through all of the The Mind levels, you have collectively won the game. You can all take a moment to collectively cheer.
