Lagavulin always bottles something for the Islay Jazz Festival and 2018 was no exception. This one was matured in first-fill American oak barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and European oak puncheons. A 20cl bottling of the Lagavulin 12 Year Old launched for Diageo's Special Releases 2023, a whisky finished in Don Julio Añejo Tequila casks. It was bottled at 56.4% ABV. Lagavulin is one of a trio of distilleries sat on the south coast of Islay. Lagavulin produces some of the smokiest whisky Scotland has to offer, with the Lagavulin 16 Year Old standing as their most storied expression. In exploring the aftertaste, I could feel the creaminess of coconut coming through and a whisper of aniseed, enveloped by a pipe tobacco cloud.. which I loved.

It continues to bring you hints of coffee and a bit of iodine. This Ardbeg 10 yo is a big whisky but not overwhelming at all. I just got my brother his first bottle of Ardbeg 10 and he is loving it. His first Islay was Bowmore 12 and I would love to see it ranked against Ardbeg 10. Hopefully I converted him to a peat head. Lagavulin celebrated their 200th anniversary in 2016, producing a number of limited edition bottlings. These included a Lagavulin 8 Year Old (which would eventually become part of the distillery’s core range), a Lagavulin 25 Year Old and the Lagavulin 12 Year Old (a regular feature of Diageo’s Special Releases). The single malt has been matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon, refill and newly-charred rejuvenated casks before being botted at 43% abv. Originally released as a distillery exclusive for Islay's 2021 Jazz Festival, this 13-year-old single malt was matured in refill American oak casks, before finishing in casks that previously held mezcal! A jazzy release indeed, limited to just 3,000 bottles. Dry campfire with some bacon. When the smoke is gone: bright fruits, hints of honey, sea freshness. Ardbeg is slightly less medicinal than Laphroaig, however, it is more balanced and complex. Lagavulin has a more oily mouthfeel than the Ardbeg; however, the oiliness also seems to capture some raw alcohol notes.
