No love for the MV7 then? Not at all, but we believe Shure's spot on when it describes it as a ' podcast microphone, inspired by the legendary SM7B'. The MV7 is small, light, comparatively inexpensive and has a tonal fingerprint that's been developed specifically to bring clarity to the spoken voice. At a push it can be used to record sung vocals or guitar cabs and other loud instruments but, frankly, the SM7B is a better choice for these applications. This version of ShurePlus MOTIV Desktop is compatible with the following recommended firmware versions: EQ Use the equalizer to add a high-pass filter, presence or both. First off, let’s get one thing straight: If you’ve been looking to move your audio game up to the big leagues with the SM7B for a while, you should still do just that. It takes just minutes to get au fait with the SM7B's feature set, perhaps less. You'll find two windshields in the box, a standard tapered design for most voice and instrument applications and a slightly more bulbous A7WS version for broadcast. Shure claims that the A7WS offers more protection from plosive breath noise but in our experience we rarely see anyone use it. More commonly, artists will remove the windshield completely to improve the SM7B's top-end response.

Yes, it was shrewd of Shure to model the MV7's appearance on the SM7B but it’s way more capable than a lookie-likey budget mic. Provided the MV7 is pointed accurately at the sound source, it performs best within one to six inches, but you can get away with three times that distance. This, and the fact that the MV7 is smaller, will appeal to YouTubers who don't want their faces obstructed by a large, close mic. It may be useful to reset the app to restore functionality. Perform a hard reset by unplugging and re-plugging the microphone.

The Shure SM7B is a natural place to offer comparison; both are from one of the world’s most respected mic brand and both deliver exceptional speech performance. The key difference, however, lies in the lower-cost MV7’s ability to work directly with your computer without need for a separate mixer or audio interface. How important exactly is this? As previously mentioned, the SM7B is a very straightforward microphone, but to get the best results from it you'll need to master two vital settings - gain and mic placement. While the SM7B rightly has a reputation as an awesome dynamic mic it's also infamous for being a gain-hungry monster. Its low sensitivity rating of just -59dBV/Pa means it needs plenty of clean gain - Shure recommends at least +60dB - to bring it up to 0dB line level or your recordings will be quiet and potentially noisy. It's quite a lump too, at 198.7mm/7.823" long, 117mm/4.606" wide and 96mm/3.78" deep, but, to be fair, it's designed to be mounted on a stand rather than handheld. The heavyweight, integrated yoke stand makes positioning it a doddle but if you're a performer it will stop you from hurling it around ala Roger Daltrey (or, ahem, Kanye West). Those criticisms aside, there’s no doubt that the Shure MV7 is the microphone to buy for podcasters and streamers looking to up their audio game.What exactly does “grow” mean? For starters, the MV7 has two outputs: a standard XLR mic plug plus a convenient USB connection allowing you to plug it straight into your computer without an extra audio interface. The benefit here is clear: You can record high-quality audio with just a laptop and MV7 no matter where you are. But it still works with a standard audio rig requiring an XLR cable. (Pro tip: You can also use both the USB and XLR outputs at the same time!) The MV7 is also partial to a healthy portion of gain but is nowhere near as greedy as its stablemate. In fact, plug it in to your laptop via USB and you'll immediately have access to 35dB of gain, which is quite sufficient. Compatible with Windows and Mac computers. Also compatible with iOS and Android devices with applicable cables. (Cables not provided.) As producers, you struggle to get inspired if you're using the same thing. Drawing inspiration from the much-loved Shure SM7B, The MV7 opts for a more smaller footprint, and includes both XLR and USB support. For out-of-the-box recording use, the USB option is an easy choice, providing plenty of recording control through Shure’s MOTIV app. Over XLR the MV7 behaves like any other microphone, and control will be relegated to whatever mixer you’ve plugged it into. So why would someone opt instead for a shiny, new MV7? Well, there are plenty of reasons, actually, and we’ll try to make that as clear as possible right here. But we’d stress that these microphones really complement rather than compete against each other. For example, someone might use an MV7 for streaming from home and a trusty SM7B for studio recording. Or maybe your podcasting rig is already running an SM7B and you’ll want the MV7 for remote guests and recording on the road.
