Revlon Double Straight Copper + Ceramic Dual Plate Iron: This is an easy-to-use iron, but despite reaching high heat it didn’t leave my hair super smooth because the floating plates were only on one side of the tool. Plus, the short, 6-foot cord made the iron difficult to maneuver. We blame frizz and flyaways on bad weather and high humidity, but sometimes it starts with what tool we’re using — and Drybar just came to the rescue with their new innovation. The titanium plates on its styling iron slid through our hair like butter and took no stragglers in the process. The results? Hair so soft and smooth we couldn’t stop touching it. However, we should note that we were initially concerned that this hot tool would be, ironically, too hot for us (especially on fine or damaged hair), as 370 degrees is the lowest heat setting available, which is far higher than your average straightener. Fortunately, we didn’t have to clamp down on our hair for more than a few seconds, so the heat isn’t applied for very long, and Chi also happens to make a top-notch heat protectant. The tool also felt comfortable in our hands, courtesy of a slim design and silicone-textured handle, to give us a firm grip and it prevented our hands from burning on the hot iron. While we love an innovative design, we applauded the less flashy features as well, like the clear dinging sound to let us know when it reached our set temperature and a five-minute automatic shut off.

Conair Infiniti Pro Titanium Flatiron: I didn’t love the hissing sound this ceramic iron made while on, and it left my hair with a significant amount of frizz after several passes. What We Love: The steaming feature allows you to achieve your desired style with less heat to avoid further damage to already vulnerable hair. Overall, the pièce de résistance of this smart tool was the technology — after evaluating our specific hair type and texture (including whether we colored our hair or not), it selected and heated to the perfect temperature to style our strands for a totally custom experience. From there, we never needed to re-enter our information — the iron remembered our unique settings and automatically heated up to that temperature with every use. What We Love: With smooth titanium plates, a curved-edge design, and negative ion technology to reduce frizz, this versatile tool imparts shine and creates styles faster. What We Love: The short barrel fits in our hands nicely and is the perfect size for styling short hair. It’s better to start off using lower heat and fewer passes until you see what works best with your hair. “You should expect to pass over the hair one to four times depending on your hair type and texture,” says Bryant. “As straighteners are extremely hot, it’s best to use it on a lower setting at first to see how your hair handles it.” Should You Always Use A Heat Protectant With A Flat Iron?

What We Love: The Air Strait glided over different hair types with ease and fluidity — no tugging whatsoever. What We Don’t Love: You have to work in small sections to ensure hair doesn’t slip out of the plates. Never straighten your hair while it’s wet because that’s when your hair is at its most fragile state,” says Bryant. And before styling, always, always apply a heat protectant first. In addition to hairpins, a glove, a travel bag, and a detangling brush, the tool comes with a straightening comb if we ever wanted to use the chase method — a technique where you simultaneously brush and flat iron each section — while straightening our natural hair. What We Love: The hair straightener taps ionic technology and negative ions to vanquish frizz and give us an ultra smooth, sleek look.Plate material: Ceramic | Plate size: 1.5 inches x 4 inches | Temperature: 250-410 degrees Fahrenheit | Weight: 15.8 ounces | Cord length: 8 feet, 11 inches | Warranty: 1 year Using a hair straightener can be a time-consuming extra step in your journey toward polished hair. The process requires patience, precision and even some additional upper arm and shoulder strength. You want the payoff—ideally silky, smooth, shiny hair that looks really, really good—to match the effort you’re putting in. The last thing you need is for frizz to start creeping in ten minutes after you walk out the door. There are several factors, like materials and plate width, to consider in a flat iron. We consulted professional hairstylists who have extensive experience with these hot tools. Here’s what to keep in mind when choosing the best one. Material
