This latest Hurom juicer is one of the least bulky slow juicers on the market, taking up less space on the worktop than other models. It’s self-feeding, which means you can fill the top compartment with produce and walk away, letting it do the work - some juicers you need to be there permanently. We ranked juicers on how noisy they were. While all juicers will make some noise, the best ones were much quieter than others. The Sage Nutri Juicer Plus has a pleasant, substantial feel to it, without actually being too heavy. Its grey plastic details, pulp bin and plunger complement the round stainless-steel body and feed chute. The transparent lid and bowl let you observe the machine’s centrifugal process. However, once hulled, no part of the strawberries were wasted – whereas juicing would have led to discarded pulp. The resulting puree was good for creating a coulis-type strawberry sauce, which worked wonderfully over some Viennetta. Ease of use: Although assembling the machines can be quite time-consuming, we noted how easy the instruction manuals were to use and the simplicity of each machine’s functionality once put together. We also made sure they weren’t too noisy for an everyday kitchen.

Helpfully, the manual provides detailed instructions as to which fruits can be pureed, and which speed setting to use when juicing in general. While the LCD screen already makes suggestions at the turn of the knob, the manual is more thorough, informing you of correct speeds for juicing cauliflower and Brussel sprouts. (Yum?) We made orange and other fruit as well as vegetable juice in each juicer, weighing before and after so we could measure exactly how much juice was extracted. More impressively, the Bluicer is surprisingly quiet. I was expecting an almighty roar as my fruit was blitzed into dust by the high-speed blades, but it was anything but ear piercing considering the force it exerts. In blender mode, the machine was a lot louder though not significantly more than rival machines. There are two main types of juicer: centrifugal and slow juicers. Slow juicers, sometimes referred to as cold press or masticating juicers, function by breaking down the fruit or veg into smaller particles before grinding it into juice. “The result of this is more juice extracted without the internal elements generating heat, but at a much slower pace,” says Elias Ebert, managing director of iSqueeze, who provide professional juicing machines to hotels and restaurants.

As cold as a cold press

According to Paul Hellawell at UK Juicers, it is a myth that centrifugal juicers destroy enzymes in the juice. “They just don’t extract as many as a cold press masticating juicer does,” Hellawell explains. “UK Juicers’ position is that masticating juicers are better. Centrifugal juicers do not destroy nutrients, but they also do ‘produce less nutritious juice’.” How do I clean my juicer? That said, this small blender certainly punches above its weight, power-wise, with a 350W motor. Unlike some of the bigger machines on this list, I could insert whole carrots and quartered apples. They were effortlessly blitzed within seconds. It’s just the final breakdown to liquid the Breville struggles with. Although the latter is more powerful, the Nutri Juicer Plus offers plenty of oomph. It’s fairly expensive, but this juicer proves to be a great machine if you need the puree function. Anti-drip spout The spout should stop any remaining juice inside the machine from dripping onto your worktop after you've finished juicing. Look out for a drip-stop spout – this works by flipping upwards and tends to be the most effective. The best juicers typically got 15% more juice out of the fruit and veg compared to the worst on test.

This Nutripress juicer differs from the rest of the juicers in this review, in that it’s analogue and manual. No wires, no plugs, no noise, purely mechanical. Whether that is good or bad will depend on personal taste. For me it’s great, although of course limited. As UK Juicers explain, “slow juicers and cold press juicers are just new names for masticating juicers”. This is because terms like “cold press” have been seen as a good marketing tool. The key difference is that these juicers break down a fruit or vegetable into smaller particles before the juice is ground out. More juice is extracted, according to Elias Ebert of iSqueeze, but it takes longer – although still less than a minute to make your morning juice. What are centrifugal juicers and how do you use them? Large feed chutes Some of the easiest juicers to use have extra-large feeding tubes that you can fit whole apples and oranges down. This saves time, as you don't have to pre-chop all your ingredients. Tips for living well — get our free Food & Health newsletter: shop savvy, eat well, stay healthy Different types of juicer Sage says the Bluicer uses “cold-spin” technology to prevent the blades, and in turn the juice, from heating up during juicing. This is something centrifugal juicers can suffer from due to the high speed of the blades. It’s difficult to tell exactly how effective this is but the juices I produced certainly didn’t taste warm.Non-slip feet Most juicers we tested have these. They are usually small rubber pads or suction cups that help to keep your juicer stable during use. Cleaning brush We found juicers that came with a cleaning brush were much easier to clean, as they can reach into nooks and crannies to remove small bits of pulp.
