So many people recommended the book to Lewis to help in his own grief that at last he was forced to admit he wrote it. But if it should really become manifest - if there ever came an echo that did not die away but swelled into the sound itself - you would know it. His experiences as a child, whether his physical clumsiness or the death of his mother, taught him to expect things to go wrong. But the absence of 'soul' in that sense makes the infliction of pain upon them not easier but harder to justify, for it means that animals cannot deserve pain, nor profit morally by the discipline of pain, nor be recompensed by happiness in another life for suffering in this. He saw in his imagination a faun (a mythological creature like a man with goat legs) carrying parcels in a snowy wood.

They have humanlike personalities and free will of their own and seem to be responsible for their own actions. That may ruffle some feathers, but if you’ve spent any time in the witchy communities online you’ll know some of those communities can be just as “my way or the highway” as other religious groups! You can use any two items that represent feminine receptivity and male virility and unite them into a state of completeness. Recent profiles of witchcraft have often focused on young witches who self-identify as pagan and who self-consciously distance themselves from Christianity. We have prayers; I normally give people a meditation, then send people off for ten minutes to engage with the world around us in terms of the question that I’ve set; then we come back together, talk about it; then we go down the pub for an hour.
