When the baby was born, there's an intense runaway scene where Maya takes the baby with her, but she knows that the husband will probably kill the girl so she runs back and saves her too. I never had a moment where I thought “wow, this person is my twin and I’m looking in a mirror”, but I did find the characters relatable and relevant.

I can appreciate the messages in this book and I think it was an important story to tell, I just think the execution could have been a bit better. The eventual revelations about Rose and Oliver are unsuspected because their early characterization sets them up as the archetypal “wonderful couple. Magnum and Higgins are approached by Elena, a woman who was in the process of cheating on her husband when she witnessed her suitor being murdered in his home by two masked men. This is the story of Evie and you are plunged right into her nightmare as she sets out looking for her missing father Andrew. Usually, these are done to throw the reader off the scent of “who done it”, but they can become boring aspects after awhile.At 325 pages I found my self thinking there wasn't enough time to grasp the gravity of the events and the details we were being given.

This part was covered effectively, at the same time author decided to portray Anna's parents as typical over-caring Asian parents but I didn't find the part engaging. Trigger warnings: murder (in the past), racism, xenophobia, assault, kidnapping, stalking, racial slurs, hate crimes.
