More of a science and math person who's worried about the reading section? Take a look at my article on how to do well on SAT Reading for science- and math-oriented students. The version of The Official SAT Study Guide that was released for the current SAT (pictured above) is not quite as helpful—it has eight practice tests, but they're already all available online for free.

Good morning, and welcome to the third edition of the Saturday Read, the New Statesman’ s new guide to the best writing on ideas, politics, books and culture each weekend. This is Will Lloyd. The Saturday Read editor, Harry Lambert, has written this week’s sign-off. We have ten superb stories from the New Statesman , a handful of other NS articles you might like, and 15 links to pieces from across the media. Those two conferences, held by the Conservative Democratic Organisation (CDO) in Bournemouth and the National Conservatives in Westminster, may have provided some answers. Bournemouth, where delegates were on an unhappy mission to reinstall Boris Johnson to the leadership of the party, was more fun, if less serious. Musa Okwonga explains how Everything Everywhere All at Once , the film du jour , captured our “mass existential crisis”. Sheffield will be in front of their home fans on Saturday, but a look at the line shows they might need that home-pitch advantage. They will take on Bournemouth at 10:00 a.m. ET on Saturday. This week I interviewed a lord. Not just a lord either, a general too. Richard Dannatt has sent thousands of men into battle and negotiated with some of the most powerful politicians of the last 30 years. I found myself disagreeing with much of what he said about Britain’s involvement in Iraq, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to say so.HL — Jonathan Haidt, the social psychologist for our times, has written for this week’s NS on the disturbing link between social media and teenage depression. “Few parents,” Haidt writes, “would knowingly let their daughters become heavy users of anything shown to correlate with mental illness at this level.” Yet we are allowing a generation to be raised on smartphones that we know depress them. Haidt has the data . “Why would youthful mental illness rise steadily throughout the 2010s?” he asks. How – asks Jim Murphy, the former Scottish Labour leader – did progressives ever fall for the SNP? It’s useful to remember quite how excessively Nicola Sturgeon was praised by journalists when she stepped down on 15 February (with Robert Peston lauding her resignation statement as “truly remarkable”). Now, her party fears, she faces arrest. Bournemouth is the favorite in this one, according to the latest English Premier League odds, being +118 to win.

Though she is no longer a merry wife of Westminster, Sasha Swire is well-placed to review Cleo Watson’s debut novel, Whips , a sex-farce that nods and winks towards the seamier side of high-politics. This is the average number of seconds between one wave and the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. A long waveThe great thing about this Katie Stallard feature on Putin and Xi – our cover this week – is that it gives you the history of the Sino-Russian relationship. The latest “axis of autocrats” emanating from the east echoes the relationship between Stalin and Mao, except that the balance of power is now clearly tilted in China’s favour. (Stalin, Katie tells us, once made Mao wait 17 days at a country house outside Moscow before he granted him a second audience after lecturing him on how to run a nation in their first meeting.) You can also listen to Katie’s piece here . Practice tests aren't just good for learning the format of the SAT Reading section—they're also great for helping you learn from your mistakes. Shiraz Maher – a long-time NS contributor and senior lecturer in the international centre for the study of radicalisation at King’s College London – offers a knotty history of jihadism across the Middle East. It’s a good sort of knotty: he complexifies the simplified picture sometimes presented of the militant forces at play. HL

In preparing for SAT Reading, it's so important to use the best possible practice materials available to you. This means materials that most closely resemble what you'll see on the real test. Also, read my article on the fundamental strategy of SAT Reading to learn about the #1 rule to keep in mind when answering each Reading question!Blair boasted that his government would “leave British law the most restrictive on trade unions in the Western world”. Public investment was neglected in favour of the profligate private finance initiative and the City of London indulged as never before. “I always thought my job was to build on some of the things she had done rather than reverse them,” Blair confirmed on the day of Thatcher’s death.

Good morning, and welcome to the Saturday Read, the New Statesman ’s weekly guide to the best writing on ideas, politics, books and culture. This is Harry , along with Will and Pippa . This is excellent – can’t wait to read David Edmonds’ bio. A good comparison for writing a philosophical masterpiece under tenure deadline is Being and Time. HL — Tina Brown, the editor who created the modern Vanity Fair and went on to edit the New Yorker , has written this week’s NS diary. She makes two intriguing comparisons, between King Charles and his mother, and between Donald Trump and Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber – “McVeigh didn’t find his army… because he didn’t have social media.” Trump, who was indicted this week on felony charges, does. Policymakers, as Cowley’s column notes, are wholly unprepared. Without transformation in our political structures – to guarantee global ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence – this change will be almost entirely beyond our control.

Matthew Engel introduces us to Switzerland – that strange silent kingdom without a sole head of state, where the federal parliament sits just 12 weeks a year, and the dream of hyper-local politics lives on. Power is devolved to the country’s 26 cantons, and to the voters, who cast referendum votes half a dozen times a year on national issues. It also doesn't include test-taking strategies, and its lessons and answer explanations aren't quite as in-depth as they should be for students who don't understand the questions. However, it does include multiple videos, which some people find more helpful than written explanations. In the past few days, the first major snow of the winter has fallen in Kyiv. Although temperatures rose above zero again at the weekend, colder weather is forecast in the coming days and weeks.
